IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In developing countries, medical researches have been carried out by the private and government sectors. I believe that projects should be funded by the corporate and government sector. One of the reasons is that researches require investments and professional experience, which would become costly for an individuals. For example, researches that carried out at university level would become costly for the students, because these researches involve different phases to conclude a hypothesis and experiements, therefore it become difficult for an individual to afford the expense. As a result, most medical students prefer to do a project collectively in a group, which increases their interest and knowledge as well. It would become significant for their project, as students can evaluate and discuss their progress with eachother, before representing it to others. The thing that they lack while doing the project is an accessibility to the medical labs. Though, I believe researches should be carried by private and government sectors
Moreover, many researches have been carried out by the government sectors at national and international level regarding the medical sciences. These researches labs comply with the existence of medical professionals and equipments. The government has constructed these labs for the research purposes, so that people of a country can benefit from these. For example, Covid Lab that constructed in Karachi in 2020, performed various experiments and made antidotes that treated the people during the disguise. As a result, government invested money in order to save the lives. I believe that researches that carried out by the government sector, would become more beneficial for a society than the researches done solely by private .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is identifiable: you support funding from both companies and government, and you explain that research needs investment and professional expertise. The discussion of university projects and government laboratories is relevant, with the Karachi example helping to illustrate public funding. However, the task asks you to consider whether research should be carried out by private companies, individuals, or government, and the response focuses mainly on government and students rather than explaining the private sector’s role. The opening also refers to developing countries without developing that context. Some ideas, such as how group work benefits students, are explained more fully than the central comparison of funding options. Develop the advantages and risks of each source and make your final position more explicit.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has an overall progression: it first discusses the cost and collaborative nature of research, then turns to government laboratories and public benefit. Paragraphing and signposts such as “Moreover” and “As a result” help readers follow this broad structure. However, the first paragraph contains several different points—individual affordability, group work, student learning, and laboratory access—without clearly showing how each supports the main argument about who should fund research. Some links are also unclear: “The thing that they lack” has an uncertain reference, and the final sentence of the first paragraph repeats the position rather than advancing the discussion. Organise each paragraph around one funding option and use clearer references and transitions to show the relationship between claims and examples.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “investments,” “hypothesis,” “medical professionals,” and “experiments,” and the main ideas are generally understandable. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “at national and international level.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, including “medical researches,” “researches labs,” “made antidotes,” and “during the disguise.” “Research” is generally uncountable, and the example would be clearer with terms such as “laboratory,” “developed treatments,” and “during the pandemic.” Spelling errors such as “experiements” and “eachother” also reduce control. Build accuracy by learning common academic collocations and checking spelling, rather than relying on awkward or overly formal-sounding phrases.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “because,” “which,” and “so that,” and the reader can usually understand your meaning. Some sentence patterns are handled successfully, for example, “The government has constructed these labs… so that people of a country can benefit.” However, errors occur in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For instance, “researches that carried out” needs a passive form such as “research that is carried out,” while “it become difficult” should be “it becomes difficult.” The phrase “for an individuals” also has an article–plural mismatch, and “Covid Lab that constructed” is missing a relative clause and passive auxiliary. Review passive constructions, subject–verb agreement, and articles, then proofread complex sentences to ensure each clause is complete.
