IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The funding of medical research projects by private companies is increasing these days. Although, individuals or government can also fund research projects but it depends on various factors. On the one hand, research by private companies has some benefits, while on the other hand, it can have some negative consequences as well.

Funding by private companies can lessen the financial burden of the government. In this way, governmental resources can be utilized for some other important tasks.Having said that, the influence of government can not be neglected. For instance, public might not have trust in the private companies and they might negate the results of research projects funded by the private companies.

Another side of the story is that, the services of the private companies might not be affordable by a common man, government can provide subsidized services to the public. For instance, private companies are investing in medical institutions of my country, although quality research is being carried out by these organizations, yet a common man can't afford such an expensive medical education.

However, if government works in collaboration with private companies, it will be more favorable.Because it will build the trust of public and it will be accessible to all rather than the privilege being given to only elite class individuals.

In conclusion, funding by the private organizations can produce quality research outcomes and better facilities but these facilities and their benefits will be limited to a small group of people. So, the practical solution will be a partnership between the two for the common cause which is betterment of the society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your response addresses the question and gives a clear final position: collaboration between government and private companies is the most practical approach. You support this with relevant points about reducing the government’s financial burden, public trust, and affordability, including an example from your country. This meets the task well, and the recommendation shows some development beyond simply listing advantages and disadvantages. However, the discussion of individuals is only mentioned in the introduction and is not explored, and the example about expensive medical education does not clearly explain how research funding affects access to medical services. Develop these links and compare the roles of all three options more directly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall structure: it introduces the issue, considers benefits and concerns, proposes collaboration, and concludes with a recommendation. Paragraphing helps separate the main stages of the argument, and phrases such as “On the one hand” and “In conclusion” guide the reader. However, some transitions feel mechanical or do not accurately signal the relationship between ideas. For example, “Another side of the story” introduces affordability without clearly connecting it to the preceding point about public trust, while “However” before the collaboration proposal could be linked more explicitly to the drawbacks just discussed. Improve progression by making each paragraph’s central point clear and using references such as “these concerns” to connect ideas precisely.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary to discuss funding, access, and public confidence, including “financial burden,” “subsidized services,” and “collaboration.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and the topic is generally handled with appropriate language. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “governmental resources” and “research outcomes.” However, some expressions are imprecise or unnatural: “negate the results” does not clearly convey public distrust, and “a common man” is less suitable than a neutral term such as “ordinary people.” Repetition of “private companies,” “government,” and “facilities” also limits flexibility. Aim for more precise collocations and vary key terms without obscuring meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional phrasing in “if government works in collaboration with private companies” and contrast structures such as “while on the other hand.” The main argument remains understandable despite some grammatical and punctuation errors. For example, “Although, individuals or government can also fund … but it depends” combines two contrasting structures incorrectly, and “Because it will build the trust” is a sentence fragment. There are also issues with articles and agreement, as in “public might not have trust” and “the practical solution will be a partnership … which is betterment.” Review sentence boundaries, article use, and agreement, and proofread spacing around punctuation to make the complex sentences more controlled.
