IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's world many research projects get their funding from private equities. Research projects play a key role in development of mankind and in my opinion research projects should be carried out by private companies and government and not by individuals.

Research projects going anywhere in the world are regulated by laws and different governing bodies of the respective field. The purposes of these organisations are to give a framework and provide proper safety and ethical ways to perform research. Every research needs an aproval from the concerned authority, which make sure that the research will be performed in a safe environment and also check the ethical side of the research, like keeping privacy of the subjects being used in any research. As I have seen in many research projects when students are giving questionares for their research projects, they inform that the identity of the person filling the form will be kept secret.

It is evident from histroy that almost all the perks which humans are enjoying and which makes people work easy are the result of many researches. On the other hand, it is also eveident that if people are performing experiments on their on and not in a safe and approved place, often leads to a disastrious ends. Individuals doing research without any expert's supervision are not aware of the side effects of the process which they are performing. For instance, a person in my village was trying to make electricity from some kind of explosive, end up being killed.

In conclusion, researches should be conducted and can be funded by private companies or government but the main aim is that they should be conducted in a safe way and acording to standards provided by governing bodies.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you support research being conducted by private companies and governments rather than individuals, and you give relevant reasons about regulation, safety and ethics. The example of a villager attempting to generate electricity with explosives also supports your concern about unsupervised experiments. However, the discussion focuses mainly on why individuals should not conduct research; the respective roles and advantages of private companies and government are not explained in much detail. The point about research approval and participant privacy is relevant, but it could be linked more directly to who should carry out or fund research. Develop the comparison between the two preferred groups and explain how each can contribute to responsible research.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present supporting points, and a conclusion restates your position. The progression from regulation and ethics to the risks of individual experiments is generally easy to follow. Some connections between ideas are less clear, however. For example, the paragraph about approval and privacy does not fully explain how these points distinguish government or company research from individual research. The transition “On the other hand” suggests a contrast, but the following point about unsafe experiments continues the argument against individuals. Use more precise links and make each paragraph’s central claim explicit, then connect each example directly to that claim.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “governing bodies,” “ethical,” “privacy,” “experiments” and “supervision.” These terms help communicate the main ideas, and the meaning is generally understandable. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “private equities” for private companies, “research projects going anywhere in the world,” and “make people work easy.” There are also spelling errors, including “aproval,” “histroy” and “disastrious,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural academic phrasing and check spelling carefully. Using precise terms for funding, conducting research and regulating it would make your argument clearer and more fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including explanations with “which” and conditional phrasing such as “if people are performing experiments.” Most of the argument remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity and control. For example, “Every research needs an approval … which make sure” has an agreement problem, while “often leads to a disastrous end” lacks a clear grammatical subject. The sentence about the villager also shifts into an incomplete construction: “was trying … end up being killed.” Review subject–verb agreement, sentence completeness and verb forms, especially when combining several clauses. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen the response.
