IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is true that most of the research projects are funded by private industries because private companies wants to grow financially on a larger scale. In my opinion, I strongly believe that research should be carried by the government. This is largely because the result of research may offer significant benefits to nation, despite of their socio-economic background.
To commence with, one of the major reasons why research projects are funded by private companies is to gain fame and take over the market. This is because private companies wants to gain profit from research project after it comes to market, and they want their comany label on it, so that their company gets recogonised worldwide. A clear example of this can be big industralists and manufacturer who invest million of dollars in medical research projects in order to make their company grow worldwide. As a result, they are investing for their own benefit.
Moving further, research should be carried by the government because private label products are not affordable by every individual. If the government provide appropriate funding to medical research team for experiments, they can significantly benefit the society, despite of socio-economic background. The government funded projects not only benefit to people from poorer background but also support the government hospitals for availiablity of products, which ensure hospitals to never run out of stock.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that research experiment should be funded by the government because it offer multiple benefits to society and individuals. Whereas projects funded by private companies only benefits them not the individuals and nation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear from the introduction: you believe medical research should be funded by government, and you return to this view in the conclusion. You address the comparison with private companies by explaining that they seek profit and market recognition, then argue that public funding can make medical products more accessible and support hospitals. These are relevant reasons, but some are less fully developed than others. For example, the claim that government-funded research ensures hospitals “never run out of stock” is broad and would benefit from a specific explanation or example. The private-company argument also focuses mainly on companies’ motives rather than weighing possible benefits of private research. Develop each point with clearer evidence and qualification.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present reasons, and a conclusion restates your position. The progression from private companies’ motives to the advantages of government funding is easy to follow. Linking phrases such as “To commence with,” “Moving further,” and “In conclusion” make the structure visible, though some sound formulaic and do not always express the precise relationship between ideas. Within paragraphs, the explanation generally follows the main point, but the chain from public funding to affordable products and hospital supply could be connected more explicitly. Use a wider range of natural transitions and clearer referencing so that each supporting sentence builds directly on the previous one.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “medical research,” “funding,” “socio-economic background,” and “government hospitals,” and your meaning is generally understandable. However, the range is limited in places, and several word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors reduce precision. For instance, “research experiment” is not a natural way to refer to research projects, while “private label products” does not clearly convey the idea of privately funded medical products. There are also misspellings such as “comany,” “recogonised,” and “availiablity.” Aim to use accurate topic-specific phrases and check spelling carefully; this will make your argument sound more precise and controlled.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a subordinate clause in “This is largely because…” and a conditional structure beginning “If the government provide…”. The overall meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur across the response. Subject–verb agreement is inconsistent: “private companies wants” should be “private companies want,” and “it offer” should be “it offers.” Articles and prepositions also need attention, as in “benefits to nation” and “despite of their socio-economic background.” The conditional sentence would be more accurate as “If the government provides…”. Review agreement, article use, and common preposition patterns, while continuing to practise complex sentences with careful proofreading.
