Student answer (Band 5.0)
overall , as we see portugal and italy since 1967 their average of carbon dioxide is increase step by step in five years the average being high almost 4 degrees in both countries , other side as we see uk and sweeden their average decrease , sweden from 1967 to 1977 was up but from 1977 untill 2007 we can notice that it fell down same thing happend with united kingdom it was average after many years carbon docxide emission per person there fell down
at the and we can notice that this 4 country has different result in this years we can compare between them the result shows that italy and portugal in the way to increase it but uk and sweden are in the opposit way to decreas it and i think its a positive thing for the last two countries and the way how they reduced it

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the broad contrast: emissions rise in Italy and Portugal, while the UK declines overall, and Sweden rises before falling. These are relevant main features. However, the account is only partial because it gives no clear, accurate overview of the countries’ relative levels or the key changes across the period. For example, the UK remained the highest emitter throughout, while Portugal began lowest and finished level with Sweden; these useful comparisons are missing. The claim that emissions increased “almost 4 degrees” in both Italy and Portugal is inaccurate and uses the wrong unit: the approximate rises were 3.3 and 4.2 metric tonnes respectively. Focus on the main trends and support them with selected, correctly expressed figures rather than adding an unsupported opinion about reductions being positive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation around contrasting trends, and phrases such as “other side” and “at the end” show an attempt to connect ideas. The reader can generally follow the distinction between the rising and falling countries. However, the response has no clear paragraph structure or progression from an overview to supporting details, and several ideas are repeated in the final section. Linking expressions are sometimes inaccurate or unclear, as in “same thing happend with united kingdom,” while the long opening sentence combines several trends without clear boundaries. Group the information into a brief overview and separate detail paragraphs, for example, one for the UK and Sweden and another for Italy and Portugal. Use precise links such as “whereas,” “by contrast,” and “over the period” to make comparisons easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “carbon dioxide,” “emission per person,” “decrease,” and “increase,” so the subject is recognisable. However, the range is limited and several choices or combinations are inaccurate, which sometimes makes the meaning less clear. “Almost 4 degrees” is unsuitable for emissions, which are measured in metric tonnes, and “average of carbon dioxide” is an awkward way to describe the figures. Repeated use of “way,” “result,” and “fell down” also limits precision. Build a small set of accurate trend expressions, such as “per-capita emissions,” “rose steadily,” “declined,” and “levelled off,” and use them consistently. Check spelling of key terms and country names, including “Sweden” and “opposite.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts to connect ideas in longer sentences, including a contrast between Sweden’s initial rise and later decline. However, the range of sentence structures is limited, and attempts at complex sentences are often faulty, making some relationships difficult to interpret. For example, “Portugal and Italy since 1967 their average … is increase” has incorrect word order and verb form, while “Sweden from 1967 to 1977 was up” lacks a clear grammatical structure. There are also frequent problems with articles, agreement, tense, and punctuation, such as “this 4 country has different result.” Use straightforward past-tense sentences to report the historical data, and check that each sentence has a clear subject and verb. Full stops and capital letters would also help separate the trends.
