IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph depicts the average carbon dioxide released by an individual in the countries included United kindom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal from 1967 to 2007.

Overall, the graph illustrates the maximum emission of carbon dioxide per person happened in United Kingdom followed by Sweden.By contrast, Portugal shows the minimum emission of the same gas by per person.

Firstly, UK was the country on the highest proportion of carbon dioxide emission per person approximately greater than 10 metric tonnes in the initial 20 years but the proportion fell slightly after 1987 to 2007 , followed by Sweden which initially recorded the above 8 metric tonnes in 1967 then declined markedly from 1977 to 1987 and continued to fell slightly in next years.

On the contrary , Italy and Portugal were the countries at the lowest proportion to released carbon dioxide about less than 5 and 2 metric tonnes in 1967 respectively and both countries demonstrated the upward trend in the next years till 2007 .The emission of carbon dioxide per person in Itlay reached to greater than 7 metric tonnes while Portugal recorded greater than 5 metric tonnes till the end of 2007.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the overall ranking at the start and describe the main broad patterns: UK emissions declined, Sweden fell after an early rise, and Italy and Portugal increased. These are relevant features, and the figures you give broadly match the chart. The response also makes a useful comparison between the initially low-emitting Italy and Portugal and their later levels. However, the overview is not fully precise: Portugal is the lowest only at the beginning, while by 2007 it is level with Sweden, and Italy has overtaken Sweden. The account also misses the notable Swedish peak in 1977 and the plateau in Italy from 1997 to 2007. Include these key comparisons to make the overview more complete and develop the trends more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs grouping the higher and lower emitters. Sequencing expressions such as “Overall,” “Firstly,” and “On the contrary” help signal the stages of the report, and the reader can follow the broad movement across the period. Some links are less effective or mechanical, however. “On the contrary” does not accurately signal the relationship between the two groups, and the long final sentence combines several trends without clearly separating them. There is also little explicit comparison between countries at the end of the period. Use more precise linking and divide information into shorter, clearly focused sentences to make progression smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of topic vocabulary, including “emission,” “declined markedly,” “upward trend,” and “metric tonnes,” so the main information is generally understandable. There are also attempts to vary wording rather than repeat “increased” or “decreased.” However, several choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “highest proportion,” “lowest proportion to released,” and “reached to greater than.” Spelling errors in “United kindom” and “Itlay” also reduce accuracy. Prefer direct, conventional chart language such as “highest level,” “the lowest emissions,” and “rose to just over.” More precise vocabulary would help distinguish a peak, a gradual decline, and a stable figure.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “while” and “which,” and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in articles, verb forms, and sentence boundaries. For example, “happened in United Kingdom” needs an article and a more suitable construction, while “continued to fell slightly” should use the base form after “to.” The opening sentence also has an unclear structure around “countries included.” Punctuation spacing is inconsistent, and the final paragraph contains a run-on sequence of ideas. Aim for accurate patterns such as “emissions in the UK were highest” and check verb forms after auxiliaries and infinitives; this will make your varied structures more controlled.
