Student answer (Band 6.0)
The data displays, average discharge of carbon dioxide per individual in four different countries from 1967 to 2007.
Overall, Italy and Portugal experience almost a steady increase in carbon dioxide emission per person throughout the period. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom and Sweden showed a downfall in carbon dioxide release in five years.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response is significantly under-length at only 94 words, which prevents a full development of the task. While you have identified the main features—such as the upward trend for Italy and Portugal and the decline for the UK and Sweden—the response is incomplete and cuts off mid-sentence. To achieve a higher band, you must complete the summary by including all relevant data points and ensuring the response meets the 150-word minimum. The current lack of completion means the task is only partially addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into an introduction and a body paragraph, which is a good start. However, the abrupt ending disrupts the logical flow. Cohesive devices are used in a basic way (e.g., 'Overall', 'Meanwhile'), but the lack of completion makes it difficult to assess the overall progression of the response. To improve, ensure that your paragraphs are balanced and that you use a wider variety of linking words to connect your comparisons more fluidly.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, using terms like 'average discharge', 'fluctuation', and 'metric tonnes'. However, there are some awkward collocations, such as 'experience almost a steady increase' (should be 'experienced a relatively steady increase') and 'downfall in carbon dioxide release' (a 'decline' or 'reduction' would be more precise). The range is limited by the brevity of the text. Focus on using more precise academic vocabulary to describe trends.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'The data displays, average discharge' (unnecessary comma) and 'in five years' (which is inaccurate based on the graph). The sentence structure is often repetitive. To improve, work on subject-verb agreement and ensure that your punctuation is accurate. The incomplete nature of the final sentence also negatively impacts the grammatical assessment.
