Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all four countries and identifies the main trends, such as the decline in the UK and Sweden and the increase in Italy and Portugal. However, the overview is somewhat weak and repetitive, merely restating that trends were different rather than highlighting the most significant features, such as the convergence of Sweden and Portugal at 5 tonnes by 2007. The data reporting is generally accurate, though the description of the UK's starting point as 'an highest proportion' is slightly imprecise. To reach a higher band, ensure the overview synthesizes the data more effectively rather than just listing individual country trends.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To begin with', 'Whereas', 'On the other hand', and 'In addition'. However, some of these are used mechanically, and there are issues with sentence fragments, such as 'Which gradually started showing a decline...' and 'Which showed a swift upward graph...'. These fragments disrupt the flow of the text. Improving the connection between sentences by avoiding these fragments would significantly enhance the coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with terms like 'emissions', 'proportion', 'decline', and 'inclination' used correctly. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'Italy's foundation was at lower' and 'irregular inclination'. The repetition of 'average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person' throughout the text is unnecessary and makes the writing feel less natural. Using synonyms or referring back to the subject more concisely would improve the lexical range and flow.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('an highest proportion', 'an slower start', 'an irregular inclination') and sentence structure (the aforementioned fragments). There are also minor errors in subject-verb agreement and preposition usage, such as 'reached to 7.9 tonnes' (should be 'reached 7.9 tonnes') and 'decline in there further graph' (should be 'their'). While the meaning is always clear, the frequency of these errors limits the score.
