Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all four countries and the time period provided. However, the reporting of data is somewhat mechanical and lacks a clear overview of the main trends. The student lists data points for each country individually rather than synthesizing the information to highlight key comparisons or significant shifts. For instance, the summary at the end is too brief and does not effectively capture the contrasting trends between the countries (e.g., the decline in Sweden and the UK versus the growth in Italy and Portugal). To reach a higher band, you should group countries by their trends and provide a more analytical summary in the introduction or conclusion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is quite limited and sometimes repetitive. Phrases like 'in the year 1967' and 'in the year 1977' are used frequently, making the flow feel mechanical. There is a lack of sophisticated linking words to connect ideas between sentences and paragraphs. The referencing is sometimes unclear, such as 'The graph has different analytics with Sweden', which is not a standard way to introduce a new point. Improving the variety of transition signals would significantly enhance the logical flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but remains quite basic. You rely heavily on simple verbs like 'shows', 'increased', and 'decreased'. There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'the emission of carbon dioxide as per metric tonnes' and 'different analytics with Sweden'. While the meaning is generally clear, the range of vocabulary is limited, and there is little evidence of less common lexical items or precise terminology related to data description. To improve, try to incorporate more varied verbs and nouns to describe trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', or 'a downward trend'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. Issues include missing articles (e.g., 'look at the Italy'), incorrect preposition usage, and awkward phrasing (e.g., 'in the very beginning when there were few people living in the country'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing around commas and periods. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to affect the overall clarity of the writing. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and proper sentence construction will help improve your accuracy.
