IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The given line graph depicts the information about the average carbon dioxide emissions per masses in four countries in the year between 1967 and 2007. The data has been calibrated into metric tonnes.
Overall, it is crystal clear that the highest carbon emissions were in the United Kingdom while the lowest emissions were in Portugal.
At the fleeting glance, in the year 1967 the carbon emission was approximately 1 metric tonnes in Portugal whereas it increases to 4 metric tonnes from the year 1977 to 1987. The carbon emission in Portugal considerably improves to 5 metric tonnes in year 1997. Constantly, the average carbon dioxide was similar in year 2007 which was around 5 metric tonnes in both Portugal and in Sweden. It was observed that emission was gradually increases from 9 to 11 tonnes in year 1977 in Sweden. Surprisingly, this ratio decline to 7 in year 1987 while it continuously decreases to 5 metric tonnes in years from 1997 to 2007 in Sweden.
Moving ahead, in the United kingdom the highest proportion of carbon emission was in the year 1967 which was 11 tonnes while in the last years emission did not surpass by 7 metric tonnes. Moreover, in year 1967 around 3 metric tonnes was in Italy followed by next year with 7 tonnes of emissions. Whereas it rapidly increases to 8 tonnes in year 1997 which was similar in the year 2007 in Italy.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all four countries and the time period, identifying key trends such as the decline in UK emissions and the rise in Italy. However, the reporting of data is occasionally inaccurate or confusing. For example, stating that Portugal's emissions 'increases to 4 metric tonnes from the year 1977 to 1987' is vague, and the description of the UK's trend is somewhat imprecise. While the main features are selected, the analysis lacks the precision required for a higher band. The overview is present but could be more effectively integrated to highlight the contrasting trends between the countries more clearly.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is organised into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Moving ahead' and 'Moreover', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the internal structure of the body paragraphs could be improved to better group the data points. Referencing is mostly clear, though the flow between sentences is occasionally disrupted by awkward phrasing, which slightly impacts the overall readability of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, using terms like 'calibrated', 'proportion', and 'surpass'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'per masses' instead of 'per person', 'considerably improves' when describing an increase in emissions, and 'at the fleeting glance' which is an unnatural idiom in this context. While the meaning is generally conveyed, these errors limit the precision and sophistication of the writing, keeping it within the Band 6 range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and tense consistency, such as 'emission was gradually increases' and 'in year 1967 around 3 metric tonnes was in Italy'. Additionally, there are issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the main points, they occur frequently enough to hinder the overall fluency and accuracy of the response, preventing it from reaching a higher band.
