Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers the main features of the graph, identifying the overall trends for each country. However, the data reporting is imprecise and occasionally inaccurate. For instance, stating that the UK started at 10 and declined to below 10 is vague, and the description of the trends for Sweden and Italy is somewhat confusingly phrased. While the key features are selected, the lack of precision in describing the specific data points and the failure to clearly contrast the groups (those that increased versus those that decreased) limits the development. To reach a higher band, ensure that data points are cited accurately and that comparisons are made more explicitly.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally awkward, such as the transition 'The trend pattern from 1967 to 2007 varies like...'. The progression of ideas is logical, moving from an overview to specific details, but the internal cohesion within sentences is sometimes weak, making the flow feel slightly disjointed. Paragraphing is present, but the logical flow between the overview and the body paragraphs could be improved by using more sophisticated linking phrases.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision. There are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice, such as 'ascending path', 'steady downturn', and 'metric tones' (instead of 'tonnes'). The repetition of 'countries' and 'points' indicates a limited range. While the meaning is generally clear, the vocabulary does not demonstrate the flexibility or precision required for a higher band. Improving the use of collocations related to trends (e.g., 'a gradual decline', 'a sharp increase') would significantly enhance the quality of the writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. Issues include incorrect verb tenses ('had been started'), missing articles ('the United Kingdom'), and capitalization errors ('portugal', 'united kindom'). Some sentences are grammatically awkward, such as 'Sweden, Italy and portugal first showed the substantially rise then followed the trend'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable and detract from the overall clarity of the report.
