IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given graph provides us with the detail of Carbon Dioxide emissions of four major countries in Europe on a vast period of four decades.

Starting from 1967, United Kingdom had the highest emission rate of around 11 metric tonnes while, Portugal had the least rate of Carbon Dioxide emission of around one metric tonne only. Italy and Sweden lies in between having around 4 metric tonnes and 8 metric tonnes respectively.

Moving further, in 1977, the UK CO2 emission rate stood around the same. While the other three countries had a significant increase in their CO2 emission. Where, Portugal increased to 2, Italy to 6 and Sweden had 11 metric tonnes of CO2 in its environmet.

A decade later, in 1987, we can see a significant amount of decrease in UK and Sweden but the CO2 emission for Portugal and Italy keeps rising. Which is deffinitely not a good sign for their individuals.

In, 2007, Sweden and Portugal had almost same numbers for their CO2 emission i.e 5 metric tonnes. UK had its rate decreasing which is definitely a good factor and it reduced its CO2 emission to around 8 metric tonnes till 2007. Also, Italy maintained the rates for the whole decade and they have the same amount of CO2 emission which they had in 1997 which was around 8 metric tonnes.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully identified the main trends and provided data points for the four countries. You covered the start, middle, and end points of the period, which is essential for a Task 1 response. However, the analysis could be improved by grouping the countries more effectively based on their trends (e.g., those that increased versus those that decreased) rather than listing them chronologically by decade. Additionally, some of your data interpretations are slightly inaccurate, such as stating Italy 'maintained' its rate in 2007 when the graph shows a clear decline from 1997. To reach a higher band, ensure your data reporting is precise and focus on highlighting the most significant comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of time. You use some cohesive devices like 'Starting from', 'Moving further', and 'A decade later' to transition between time periods. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by mechanical phrasing, such as starting a sentence with 'Where,' or 'In, 2007'. The use of referencing is sometimes unclear, and the connection between sentences could be smoother. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that your paragraph breaks clearly separate the different stages of the data analysis.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the main points, using terms like 'emission rate', 'metric tonnes', and 'significant increase'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'vast period of four decades' (a 'period of four decades' is sufficient) and 'good factor' or 'good sign', which are too informal for an academic report. There are also minor spelling errors like 'environmet' and 'deffinitely'. To improve, focus on using more precise, neutral academic vocabulary and check your spelling of common words.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the UK', 'the Italy'), subject-verb agreement ('Italy and Sweden lies'), and punctuation (unnecessary commas after prepositions). Some sentences are fragmented or awkwardly constructed, such as 'Where, Portugal increased to 2'. To achieve a higher band, you should aim for more error-free sentences and pay closer attention to basic grammatical rules like pluralization and the correct use of articles in an academic context.
