Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response fails to adequately summarize the main features of the graph. While it mentions the four countries, the data points provided are inaccurate or confusingly presented (e.g., 'start to 1' for Portugal). The response lacks a clear overview of the trends, such as the general decline in emissions for the UK and Sweden versus the increase for Portugal and Italy. Furthermore, the response is under the 150-word minimum, which significantly impacts the ability to fully address the task requirements. The information provided is disjointed and fails to make meaningful comparisons between the countries over the 40-year period.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay lacks a logical structure. While there is an attempt at paragraphing, the progression of ideas is unclear. Cohesive devices are used in a mechanical and often incorrect way, such as 'now, firstly start with' and 'last one is'. The referencing is frequently confusing, making it difficult for the reader to follow which data belongs to which country. There is no clear introduction or summary, and the sentences do not flow logically from one to the next, resulting in a fragmented response that lacks overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is very limited and often inaccurate. There are frequent spelling errors (e.g., 'depand', 'Itli', 'incresed', 'countris', 'reagading') and word choice issues (e.g., 'raw side', 'coloum in change'). The student struggles to use appropriate terminology for describing data, such as 'metric tones' instead of 'metric tonnes' or 'percentage' when referring to absolute values. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to express the trends or comparisons required for an Academic Task 1 response, often leading to confusion for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that impede communication. There are significant issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'The graph illustrate'), sentence structure (e.g., 'this is depand on 1967'), and basic syntax. The student relies on simple sentence structures, and attempts at more complex sentences are consistently faulty. Punctuation is also problematic, with misuse of commas and periods throughout. The high frequency of errors makes the text difficult to read and understand, indicating a lack of control over basic grammatical structures.
