Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the task by identifying the main trends for the four countries. However, the overview is weak and repetitive, appearing at the end rather than as a clear summary of main features. While the data points are generally accurate, the description of the axes is incorrect (the graph is a line graph, not a bar graph, and the axes are misidentified). The analysis lacks a clear, comparative structure, which is essential for a high band score. To improve, ensure you provide a clear overview of the main trends in the introduction and avoid misinterpreting the visual data provided in the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical flow is hindered by fragmented sentences and repetitive phrasing. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often mechanical or misused, such as 'In addition 1967 to 2007 years' and 'after the 1983 it decrees'. The referencing is sometimes unclear, and the transition between the data points lacks sophistication. The final paragraph is redundant, as it restates information already provided in the body paragraphs without adding new insight or synthesis. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a clear purpose would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic terms like 'increase', 'decrease', and 'produce'. There are several spelling errors, such as 'tonnss', 'leval', and 'decrees' (instead of decreases). The student struggles with word choice, for example, using 'produce' when referring to emissions levels. While the meaning is generally clear, the range of vocabulary is insufficient to demonstrate the precision required for higher bands. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of synonyms and ensuring correct spelling and collocation when describing trends and data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede readability. There are issues with subject-verb agreement ('X axis is shows', 'united kingdom are highest'), article usage, and sentence structure. Many sentences are simple or fragmented, lacking the complexity required for higher bands. For instance, 'The country like united kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal' is not a complete sentence. While the meaning is usually understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar and punctuation prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on sentence construction and proofreading for basic errors would be highly beneficial.
