IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The graph illustrates the release of carbon dioxide per individual in four countries in the years of 1967 and 2007.

Overall, the United Kingdom had released the highest amount of gas, while Portugal remained at the lowest. In addition, Sweden, which demonstrated the greatest amount of gas emitted up to 1997, showed a massive decline until 2007.

A significant rise of gas removal was seen in Portugal from 1987 to 2007 at 5 metric tons. However, Sweden first increased the emission of gas to 10.5 metric tons in 1977, and after that a substantial decline was observed to 5 tons until 2007.

The United Kingdom released 11 metric tons of gas in 1977 and reduced it to 8 metric tons up to 2007.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the development of the task. While you have identified some main features, such as the trends for Sweden and the UK, the analysis is incomplete. You have omitted data for Italy entirely and failed to provide a comprehensive overview of the trends across the entire 40-year period. To improve, ensure you include data for all categories mentioned in the prompt and provide a more detailed comparison of the figures to fully satisfy the requirements of an Academic Task 1 response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some cohesive devices like 'Overall', 'In addition', and 'However' to link ideas. However, the progression of information is somewhat mechanical. The transition between the overview and the specific data points could be smoother. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear focus, avoiding the abrupt shifts in topic seen between the second and third paragraphs.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and range required for a higher score. You use terms like 'release of carbon dioxide' and 'gas removal' repeatedly, which sounds slightly unnatural in this context. Phrases like 'massive decline' and 'significant rise' are good attempts at descriptive language, but you should aim for more academic collocations. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise reporting verbs and nouns related to data trends will help improve the sophistication of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'in the years of 1967 and 2007' (better: 'between 1967 and 2007') and 'the release of gas' (better: 'carbon emissions'). There are also minor issues with preposition usage and tense consistency when describing historical data. To improve, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and refining your use of complex structures to ensure they are error-free.
