IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line graph provides information about the average carbon emmissions per person across four different countries: United Kingdom, sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.
Overall, United kingdom was the country with the highest emmitions of CO2 per person throughout the period, while Portugal showed the lowest CO2 emissions. By comparison, Sweden's CO2 emissions followed a different trend, experiencing a significant ddecrease after a sharp increase.
In 1967 United kingdom had the greatest CO2 emissions, with just above 10 tonnes at the beginning of the period. This figure fell significantly, ending the period at about 8.5 tonnes.
By contrast, Italy and Portugal witnessed a sharply increase, with Italy growing from about 4 tonnes in 1967 to almos 8 tonnes by 2007. Similarly, Portugal increases from nearly 1 tonnes in 1967 to around 5.5 tonnes by 2007.
Sweeden saw a different trend. It grew slightly from just above 8 tonnes in 1970 to a peak of approximately 10 tonnes in 1977 before falling and ended the period at the same level as Portugal.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all key features of the graph, including the overall trends and specific data points for the four countries. You successfully identified the highest and lowest emitters and noted the contrasting trends, such as Sweden's peak and subsequent decline. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the main features. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are accurate; for instance, you mentioned Sweden started in 1970, but the graph shows data from 1967. Additionally, ensure consistent capitalization for country names (e.g., 'sweden' should be 'Sweden'). Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information by country or trend. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use cohesive devices such as 'By contrast', 'Similarly', and 'In 1967' to link sentences and paragraphs effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different stages of the analysis. The flow is generally smooth, although some minor improvements in the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs could make the structure even more cohesive. Overall, the organization is clear and supports the reader's understanding.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly, using terms like 'significant decrease', 'sharp increase', and 'witnessed'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'emmissions' (emissions), 'ddecrease' (decrease), 'almos' (almost), and 'Sweeden' (Sweden). These errors are noticeable but do not impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'fluctuated' or 'plateaued', and ensure careful proofreading to eliminate basic spelling mistakes. The range is adequate for the task, but more attention to accuracy would elevate the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While there is a good attempt at using complex sentences, there are several grammatical inaccuracies. For example, 'sharply increase' should be 'a sharp increase', 'Portugal increases' should be 'Portugal increased' (past tense consistency), and 'nearly 1 tonnes' should be 'nearly 1 tonne'. These errors occur frequently but do not prevent the reader from understanding the data. To achieve a higher band, focus on maintaining consistent verb tenses throughout the report and ensuring correct subject-verb agreement. Increasing the variety of error-free complex structures will also help improve your score.
