Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers all four countries and the time period provided. However, it lacks a clear overview of the main trends, which is essential for a high band score in Task 1. The information is presented as a list of data points rather than a summary of key features. For example, the report mentions specific figures for each year but fails to highlight the overall contrast between the UK's decline and Portugal's growth. To improve, you should include an introductory overview paragraph that identifies the most significant trends at a glance.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the information. However, the use of cohesive devices is very limited and often mechanical. Phrases like 'In 1967' and 'It remains stable' are used repeatedly, making the flow feel somewhat disjointed. There is a lack of linking words to connect ideas or show relationships between the data points. To improve, try using a wider variety of transition signals such as 'In contrast,' 'Conversely,' or 'Meanwhile' to better connect your sentences and paragraphs.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite basic and repetitive. You frequently use the same verbs, such as 'increased' and 'decrease,' and there are several spelling errors, such as 'die oxide' instead of 'dioxide' and 'emmison' instead of 'emission.' The phrasing 'Italy country' and 'Sweden country' is unnatural; it is better to simply use the country names. To achieve a higher score, you should incorporate more precise vocabulary related to trends, such as 'fluctuated,' 'peaked,' or 'remained steady,' and ensure you spell technical terms correctly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response relies heavily on simple sentence structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the' is often missing) and verb tenses. For instance, you write 'it start decrease' instead of 'it started to decrease' and 'Italy country has' instead of 'Italy had.' Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after periods and commas. To improve, focus on using a mix of simple and complex sentences and pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage when describing past data.
