Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers the main features of the graph, identifying the trends for the four countries. However, the data reporting is often inaccurate. For example, the UK started at 11 tonnes and ended at 9, but the text claims it 'decreased and at reach at 9' after 2007, which is confusing. The description of Sweden's trend is also imprecise, and the figures for Portugal are misread (1 tonne vs the actual starting point). While the overall trend is identified, the lack of precision in reporting data points and the failure to clearly compare the countries prevents a higher score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organised into paragraphs, but the flow is disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is mechanical and often misused, such as 'After for carbon emissions' and 'To pen down that'. The referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult to follow the progression of ideas. While there is a basic structure, the lack of logical transitions between sentences and the repetitive sentence starters hinder the overall coherence of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic terms like 'carbon emissions' and 'metric tones'. There are several errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'pervious years 40 years', 'major a decreases', and 'high Rocketed'. These errors occasionally impede the reader's understanding of the specific data points being described. A wider range of vocabulary related to trends (e.g., 'fluctuated', 'plateaued', 'gradual decline') is needed to reach a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response relies on simple sentence structures, and there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Issues include incorrect verb tenses ('UK's carbon emissions... was 11'), missing articles, and awkward phrasing ('It was high Rocketed'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with run-on sentences and incorrect capitalization. While the meaning is generally discernible, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar and sentence construction limits the score to the 5.0 band.
