Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph demonstrates the average carbon dioxide emissions per individual in different countries from 1967 to 2007.

Overall, Country with most carbon dioxide emissions per person is United Kingdom but their graph is gradually decreasing. Portugal and Sweden have reached nearly same CO2 emissions near 2007 despite of their massive gap in 1967 because Sweden's CO2 emissions decreased while Portugal's increased significantly.

Italy also records increment in CO2 emissions over time.

United Kingdom constantly has the highest CO2 emission among all 4 countries, but they have shown significant improvement over time by reaching nearly 8.5 CO2 emission per person in 2007 from nearly 11 in 1967. Sweden started by approximately 8.5 and go over 10 by year 1977. The showed a very good decrease in CO2 emission consistently.

On the other side Portugal showed a massive lift in CO2 emissions metric reaching near 5.5 in 2007 from 1 in 1967. Italy also Started near 4 in 1967 but reached approximately 8 in 2007 showing decline in quality.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response provides a clear overview of the main trends and identifies key features, such as the UK's decline and the convergence of Sweden and Portugal. However, the analysis is slightly hampered by inaccuracies in data interpretation. For instance, you state that Italy showed a 'decline in quality' while the graph shows an increase in emissions, which is a significant misinterpretation of the data. Additionally, the description of the UK's trend is somewhat repetitive. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are described accurately and that the comparison between countries is more precise, focusing on the specific periods of change rather than just general statements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs focusing on specific country trends. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Overall', 'On the other side', and 'In addition', though some transitions feel a bit mechanical. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the referencing is occasionally weak, such as the use of 'they' to refer to the United Kingdom, which is a country. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer to their antecedents would enhance the flow of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'gradually decreasing', 'significant improvement', and 'massive lift'. However, there are some issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'records increment' (should be 'records an increase') and 'decline in quality' (which is contextually incorrect for CO2 emissions). The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main points, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Focusing on more academic collocations and ensuring words are used in the correct context will help improve this score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('Country with most', 'United Kingdom constantly has'), subject-verb agreement issues ('The showed a very good decrease'), and awkward phrasing ('reaching nearly 8.5 CO2 emission'). These errors occur frequently enough to be noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding the overall message. To improve, focus on article usage and proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and sentence structure consistency.
