Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to cover the main features of the graph, but the information is often inaccurate or poorly presented. For example, the student states the UK started at 11% and ended at 9%, whereas the graph shows metric tons, not percentages. Furthermore, the description of trends is confusing; the student uses terms like 'Fastly increasing' and 'constantly increasing' in ways that do not accurately reflect the data points. While the response identifies the four countries and the time period, the lack of precision in reporting the data and the failure to make meaningful comparisons between the countries significantly limits the task achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is mechanical and often misused, such as 'Not only this, but Next country was also Italy'. The referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between the countries. The concluding paragraph attempts to summarize the trends but fails to provide a clear overview, instead repeating the confusion found in the body paragraphs. The lack of logical flow and the repetitive structure hinder the overall coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The range of vocabulary is limited and often inappropriate for an academic report. The student consistently uses 'ratio' instead of 'emissions' or 'levels', and 'metric tons' is used incorrectly as a percentage. Phrases like 'Fastly increasing' are non-standard and demonstrate a lack of control over word formation. There is also significant repetition of basic verbs like 'increasing' and 'decreasing'. The vocabulary is insufficient to convey the data with the necessary precision required for an Academic Task 1 response, often leading to confusion regarding the actual meaning of the data presented.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that impede communication. There are persistent issues with sentence structure, such as 'United Kingdom in was 1967 is the highest metric tons', which lacks a clear subject-verb relationship. Preposition usage is often incorrect (e.g., 'in was 1967'), and there are errors in tense and word order throughout the text. While the student attempts to use complex sentences, these are almost always faulty, leading to a lack of clarity. The high frequency of errors in basic grammar significantly affects the readability of the report.
