IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The multiline chart illustrates the average carbon dioxide releases per person in the four different countries- United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal from 1967 to 2007.
Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily evident that Portugal and Italy experienced a significant increase in carbon dioxide emissions at the end of the time frame, whereas United Kingdom and Sweden witnessed a decline.
In 1967, nearly 11 metric tonnes CO2 released by United Kingdome, which consistently decreased over the time to 9 metric tonnes in 2007. Sweden represented around 9 metric tonnes CO2 emissions in 1967, which rose to 10 metric tonnes within a year. Afterwards, it drastically dipped to approximately 7 metric tonnes and reached by 5 metric tonnes at the end.
Regarding remaining countries, both of them represented the similar trend. In 1967, the difference between carbon dioxide emissions in Italy and Portugal were roughly 2.5 metric tonnes, which remained consistent throughout and ended by a progression from 4 metric tonnes to 8metric tonnes and 1.5 metric tonnes to 5 metric tonnes respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all requirements of the task by identifying the main trends and making relevant comparisons between the four countries. The overview is clear, effectively contrasting the downward trends of the UK and Sweden with the upward trends of Italy and Portugal. Key features, such as the starting and ending points, are highlighted. However, the description of the data for Sweden is slightly inaccurate; the text mentions a rise to 10 metric tonnes 'within a year' which is not clearly supported by the graph, and the description of the decline is somewhat confusing. Overall, the response provides a good summary of the data.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized into four paragraphs: an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on the different trends. Cohesive devices such as 'Looking from an overall perspective', 'In 1967', and 'Regarding remaining countries' are used to guide the reader. However, the referencing is occasionally mechanical, and the transition between the description of the UK and Sweden in the third paragraph is slightly abrupt. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the distinct groups of data, which aids the overall flow of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, with terms like 'multiline chart', 'significant increase', 'consistently decreased', and 'drastically dipped'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'represented the similar trend' instead of 'followed a similar trend' and 'reached by 5 metric tonnes' which is grammatically awkward. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band score. The use of 'United Kingdome' contains a spelling error.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'nearly 11 metric tonnes CO2 released by United Kingdome' (missing verb 'were') and 'the difference... were' (subject-verb agreement error). Additionally, 'ended by a progression' is an awkward phrasing. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. The punctuation is generally functional, but the control over complex structures is inconsistent, with some sentences feeling slightly forced or unnatural in their construction.
