Student answer (Band 5.0)
The given line graph depicts the information about the exhaling CO2 proportion of per individual from the year 1967 to 2007 in metric tonnes. The four countries are United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal and Italy.
Overall, the country UK had showed the highest frequency in releasing CO2 gas from the year 1967 to 2007 which is 7 and 9 tonnes respectively approximately. However, Portugal and was the lowest in the number of CO2 emission which is almost 5 metric tonnes in the last 4 decades.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarise the main features of the graph, but it fails to accurately report the data. For instance, the claim that the UK reached 9 tonnes is incorrect based on the provided graph, and the description of trends is confusing and contradictory. The summary lacks a clear overview of the overall trends, such as the general decline in emissions for some countries versus the fluctuations in others. The information provided is often inaccurate or poorly interpreted, which significantly hinders the reader's understanding of the data. To improve, ensure that you carefully observe the starting and ending points of each line and describe the general movement (increase, decrease, or fluctuation) rather than just listing isolated figures.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or misused, such as 'To begin with' and 'Furthermore', which do not fit the context of a data summary. There is also a lack of clear referencing; for example, the mention of 'Portugal and Sweden country' is repetitive and grammatically awkward. The transition between the overview and the body paragraphs is abrupt. To improve, focus on grouping information logically—perhaps by comparing countries with similar trends—and use linking words that naturally connect the data points rather than just acting as list markers.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and contains several inaccuracies. Phrases like 'exhaling CO2 proportion' are unnatural; 'emissions' is the correct term. The repetition of 'country' and 'showed' indicates a restricted range. There are also errors in word choice, such as 'frequency' when referring to the amount of emissions. To reach a higher band, you should use more precise terminology related to data description, such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', 'remained stable', or 'experienced a downward trend'. Expanding your vocabulary to include these specific terms will help you describe the graph more accurately and professionally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'the country UK had showed', 'Portugal and was the lowest', and 'which becomes stable in unchanged'. These errors involve incorrect verb tenses, unnecessary words, and faulty sentence structure. While some simple sentences are clear, the attempt at more complex structures often results in errors. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensure that your sentence structures are grammatically sound. Proofreading for basic errors like missing articles or incorrect prepositions will help improve the overall accuracy of your writing.
