Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to summarise the graph but fails to provide a clear overview or highlight the most significant trends effectively. The description of the data is repetitive and lacks precision, often using vague phrases like 'after the same year' rather than identifying specific time periods or trends. Key features, such as the peak emissions for Sweden or the consistent decline in the UK, are not clearly articulated. The response lacks a proper structure, such as an introduction or a concluding summary, which is essential for an Academic Task 1 report. To improve, you should focus on grouping data logically and identifying the overall trends rather than listing changes year by year.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response lacks paragraphing, which makes it difficult to follow the progression of ideas. There is a lack of cohesive devices to link sentences; instead, the text relies on repetitive sentence structures such as 'X was also increase'. The referencing is often unclear, particularly with the phrase 'after the same year', which is used repeatedly without a clear antecedent. To improve, you should use a variety of linking words (e.g., 'in contrast', 'meanwhile', 'subsequently') and organize your report into distinct paragraphs: an introduction, an overview of main trends, and specific details.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is very limited and repetitive. You frequently use the word 'increase' or 'decrease' without variation, and there are errors in word form, such as 'Sweden was gradually increase' instead of 'gradually increasing'. The use of 'nineteen sixty seven' written out in words is inappropriate for a data report, where figures should be used. There is a lack of precise terminology for describing trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', or 'remained stable'. To improve, learn synonyms for common verbs and practice using adverbs to describe the rate of change, such as 'sharply', 'steadily', or 'marginally'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that impede clarity. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'United kingdom and Sweden was fall down') and tense usage (e.g., 'The carbon dioxide emission was falls'). The sentence structures are simple and repetitive, lacking the variety of complex sentences required for a higher band. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the capitalization of countries and the use of commas. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring that subjects and verbs agree, and using consistent verb tenses when describing past data.
