Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the task achievement. The essay is incomplete, cutting off mid-sentence, and fails to provide a summary of the main features or a clear overview of the trends over the 40-year period. While the student attempts to list data points from 1967, the lack of development and the failure to complete the task mean that the requirements are only partially addressed. To improve, you must ensure you cover the entire timeframe, identify key trends (such as the convergence of emissions), and provide a concluding overview.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response lacks a clear structure. While there is an attempt at paragraphing, the progression of ideas is disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'To begin with', 'secondly', 'Thirdly', 'lastly'). Because the text ends abruptly, there is no logical flow or conclusion. To improve, focus on grouping data logically—such as comparing countries with rising trends versus those with declining trends—rather than listing every data point chronologically, and use a wider variety of linking words to connect your sentences more naturally.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. You rely heavily on basic phrasing such as 'was' and 'it was' to describe data. There are also errors in word choice and form, such as 'rised' (the correct past tense is 'rose') and 'got boosted'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to demonstrate the flexibility required for higher bands. To improve, incorporate more precise verbs for describing trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', 'stabilized', or 'surpassed', and ensure you use correct terminology for units of measurement.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that hinder readability. There are issues with sentence structure, such as the run-on list in the introduction and the incomplete sentence at the end. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing commas and capitalization errors (e.g., 'United kingdom'). The range of structures is very limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences. To improve, practice using complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses or subordinating conjunctions (e.g., 'While the UK saw a decline, Sweden experienced an increase'), and pay closer attention to basic subject-verb agreement and capitalization rules.
