Student answer (Band 5.5)

The graph above illustrates the average of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions for each single person in four differences country in European such as United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal from 1967 to 2007. Units are measured in metric tones.

Overall, it can be seen that Sweden was increased rapidly to the top of the peak at the start of the period, at the same time , Italy and Portugal rose consistently at the first year. However, the United kingdom declined dramatically from the beginning of the period to the final period.

The major increase of CO2 was Sweden which it rose rapidly from over 8 metric tones and hit the peak to over 10 metric tones between 1967 and 1977. This figures was then fell sharply and met Italy in 1987 of approximately 7 metric tones, then drop slightly almost 6 metric tones in 2007. Italy and Portugal have had a similar trend of increase from the start of the period given. Italy had rose consistently over 6 metric tones in 1977 and increase slightly till it remained relatively from 1997 to 2007 same as Portugal.

Moreover, there was a dramatically decline in the UK started from 1967 to 2007 which decreased from approximately 11 to over 8 metric tones.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers all the requirements of the task. You have identified the main trends and made relevant comparisons between the four countries. However, the overview is slightly inaccurate; for instance, stating that Sweden increased to a peak 'at the start of the period' is not entirely supported by the data, as the peak occurred in 1977. Additionally, some descriptions of the data are imprecise, such as 'hit the peak to over 10 metric tones', which could be more clearly stated. To improve, ensure that your overview captures the most significant trends more accurately and that specific data points are described with greater precision.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Overall', 'However', and 'Moreover', to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing and mechanical transitions. For example, the transition between the description of Sweden and Italy in the third paragraph is a bit abrupt. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider range of cohesive devices more naturally and ensure that the progression of ideas within and between paragraphs is smoother.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'emissions', 'metric tones', 'dramatically', and 'consistently'. However, there are several errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'four differences country in European' (should be 'four different European countries') and 'This figures was then fell' (should be 'This figure then fell'). Some phrasing is also repetitive or slightly unnatural. To improve, work on using more precise terminology for describing trends and ensure that your word forms and collocations are accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Issues include subject-verb agreement ('Sweden was increased', 'Italy had rose'), incorrect verb tenses, and awkward sentence construction ('it remained relatively from 1997 to 2007 same as Portugal'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are noticeable and occur frequently. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence structures and proofreading for common errors such as verb tense consistency and subject-verb agreement.
