Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers all four countries and the time period, identifying key trends such as the increase in Portugal and Italy and the decrease in the UK and Sweden. However, the reporting of data is often inaccurate or confusing. For example, stating Italy 'ranked 7' is a misinterpretation of the data, and the description of the UK's decline is imprecise. While the main features are identified, the lack of precision in data reporting and the tendency to over-generalize in the conclusion prevent a higher score. The overview is present but could be more clearly integrated with the specific data points.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into an introduction, body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion. However, the logical progression is hindered by awkward phrasing and mechanical use of cohesive devices. Phrases like 'Simultaneously' and 'On the other hand' are used, but the connections between sentences are often strained. The referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the sentence 'they both remained at normal postion', which lacks a clear antecedent. Paragraphing is present, but the internal structure of the paragraphs lacks the flow required for higher bands.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and contains several inaccuracies. The term 'carbon dioxide elimination' is incorrect in this context; 'emissions' is the standard term. The student uses 'drastic increase' and 'immense range', but the word choice is often imprecise, such as 'normal postion' or 'balance position'. There are also issues with word formation and collocation, such as 'undermentioned' (which is not standard in this context) and 'got increased'. The range is sufficient to convey the basic meaning, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are issues with article usage ('the United kingdom'), subject-verb agreement, and sentence structure. For instance, 'there was drastic increase occured' is grammatically incorrect. Punctuation is also problematic, with unnecessary semicolons and commas used incorrectly. While there is an attempt at complex sentences, they are often faulty, such as 'in Italy a massive change was recorded as well; such as, it was 4 metric tonnes which ranked 7 in 2007'. The control of grammar is inconsistent.
