Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers all four countries and the time period provided. However, the reporting of data is somewhat inaccurate and lacks a clear overview. For instance, the statement that the UK 'reached near the 8' in 2007 is imprecise, and the overview paragraph is underdeveloped. The summary lacks a clear synthesis of the main trends, such as the convergence of emissions levels. While the task is addressed, the lack of precision in describing the data points and the absence of a strong, analytical overview limit the score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the structure is somewhat mechanical. The use of cohesive devices is limited and occasionally repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'start' and 'reached'. The progression of ideas is clear, but the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs is abrupt. The conclusion is also quite weak, merely restating the topic rather than summarizing the key findings. Improving the use of linking words and referencing would help the flow of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is basic and repetitive. Phrases like 'normal carbon dioxide emissions' and 'great emission' are imprecise and unnatural. There is limited use of less common lexical items or collocations related to data description. The student relies on simple verbs like 'start', 'reached', and 'grow' throughout the text. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to incorporate more varied vocabulary for describing trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', 'remained stable', or 'a significant decline'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'This graph describe', 'four Europe countries describe') and incorrect article usage (e.g., 'in the Europe countries'). Sentence structures are simple, and there is a lack of complex sentence forms. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after commas. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic structures prevents the response from reaching a higher band.
