Student answer (Band 6.0)
The linear representation compares the average carbon dioxide emission per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.
It can be seen clearly that United Kingdom had the highest carbon emission in 1967, with near about 11 metric tonnes. It was closely followed by Sweden , with about 9 metric tonnes carbon dioxide emission per person. Moreover, more than 4 metric tonnes of average carbon emission was accounted in Italy and less than 2 metric tonnes of carbon emission was recorded in Portugal in the same period.
Furthermore, carbon emission in U.K. decreased constantly reaching at 9 metric tonnes per person in 2007. Similarly, carbon emission in Sweden also decreased to almost 6 metric tonnes per person, but it rose a little in 1977 to somewhat 10.5 metric tonnes.
On the other hand, there were some increasing trends also. average carbon emission in Italy rose constantly throughout the period and reached almost 9 metric tones by the end of 2007. Moreover, Portugal also witnessed a similar trend as its carbon emission per person also increased reaching almost 6 metric tonnes in the above mentioned year.
Overall, it is evident that carbon emission in U.K decreased but it still remains the highest in the given period. And carbon emission increased dramatically in Portugal.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully identifies the main features and trends of the graph. You have provided a clear overview and supported your points with data from the four countries. However, the summary could be improved by making more direct comparisons between the countries rather than describing them in isolation. For example, noting that Italy's emissions surpassed Sweden's by the end of the period would strengthen the analysis. The data points are generally accurate, though the phrasing 'near about' is imprecise for a formal report. Overall, you have covered all parts of the task well, providing a clear and logical summary of the provided information.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a summary. You use cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Similarly', and 'On the other hand' to guide the reader through the information. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group related data. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be more varied to improve the flow. For instance, instead of repeating 'carbon emission' frequently, you could use pronouns or synonyms to link ideas more fluidly. The progression of ideas is clear, and the structure supports the overall purpose of the report effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'decreased constantly', 'rose', and 'witnessed a similar trend'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'near about' is informal and redundant, and 'metric tones' contains a spelling error ('tonnes' is the correct unit). To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary, such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', or 'remained stable'. While the current vocabulary is adequate for the task, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('the United Kingdom') and awkward phrasing ('reaching at 9 metric tonnes'). Additionally, 'somewhat 10.5' is not standard English usage. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on article usage and ensure that prepositions are used correctly with verbs of movement (e.g., 'reached 9 metric tonnes' rather than 'reaching at').
