Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph tracks the changes in average emission of carbon dioxide in metric tones by every person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007. Overall, in Italy and Portugal emission of carbon dioxide was in increasing trend. However, opposite pattern was seen in United Kingdom.

On the one hand, in 1967 emission of CO2 in Sweden was 9 metric tones per person. Then it increased to slightly higher than 10 metric tones per person in 1977. However, after 1977 emission of CO2 sharply decreased and reached to 5 metric tones per person in 2007. Furthermore, emission of CO2 by every person in UK was 11 metric tones. and it was stable after a decade then it gradually decreased through out, and at the end of 2007 emission of CO2 was slightly higher than 8 metric tones.

On the other hand, emission of CO2 continuously increased and reach to edge of 8 metric tones, However, it was stable after 10 years. Same pattern seen with Portugal, emission of CO2 in 1967 was 1 metric tones per person. Moreover, it increased to 5 metric tones in 1997 and then stabled at 5 metric tones after 10 years.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the main trends for all four countries. You successfully highlighted the contrasting patterns between the UK/Sweden (downward trend) and Italy/Portugal (upward trend). However, the overview is slightly underdeveloped; while you mention the trends, you could improve by explicitly noting the starting and ending points or the most significant peaks to provide a more comprehensive summary. The data points are generally accurate, though the description of the trends could be more precise in terms of the specific timeframes mentioned in the graph.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into an introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand' to structure the comparison. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the third paragraph where the subject of the sentence is missing ('Same pattern seen with Portugal'). Improving the flow between sentences and ensuring each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would enhance the overall coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'metric tones', 'gradually decreased', and 'continuously increased'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'stabled' (should be 'stabilized') and 'reach to edge of' (which is non-standard). Additionally, there is some repetition of phrases like 'emission of CO2'. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' and ensure that collocations are used more naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('in United Kingdom') and verb forms ('emission... was in increasing trend'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some sentences ending abruptly or containing comma splices. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles will help improve your accuracy.
