Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response provides a clear overview of the main trends, identifying the starting and ending positions for the four countries. You successfully selected key features, such as the downward trend for the UK and Sweden and the upward trend for Italy and Portugal. However, the analysis is slightly hampered by inaccurate data reporting; for example, stating the UK dropped to 11 metric tonnes and then reached 7 is confusing, and the description of Sweden's fluctuations is imprecise. To reach a higher band, ensure that the data points cited are clearly linked to the years provided in the graph to avoid ambiguity.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Overall', 'With regard to', and 'On the other hand', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'On the hand' (missing 'other') and the repetitive structure of the sentences. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect the data points more fluidly rather than listing them in a repetitive manner.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, using terms like 'illustrates', 'fluctuated', and 'metric tonnes'. However, there is a lack of variety, and some word choices are imprecise or incorrect, such as 'starting period' instead of 'the start of the period' and 'down trend' instead of 'downward trend'. There are also minor errors in word form, such as '1 metric tonnes' (should be 'tonne'). To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary related to trends, such as 'peaked', 'remained stable', or 'gradual decline', and ensure subject-verb agreement regarding units of measurement.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'the United Kingdom had highest figure' (missing article), 'it follow the down trend' (subject-verb agreement), and 'reached to 7 metric toones' (unnecessary preposition 'to' and spelling error). While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on basic sentence construction, correct use of articles, and consistent verb tenses will significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
