Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response attempts to address the task but fails to provide a clear or accurate summary of the data. The description of the trends is confusing and contains factual errors, such as claiming Italy had the highest emissions throughout the period, which contradicts the provided graph. The overview is extremely brief and lacks the necessary detail to highlight the main features or significant trends. The response focuses on repetitive, unclear descriptions of individual data points rather than synthesizing the information. To improve, you must focus on identifying the overall trends (e.g., the decline in UK/Sweden emissions versus the increase in Portugal/Italy) and support these with accurate data points.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0

The essay lacks logical organization and progression. The paragraphs are disjointed, and the ideas are presented in a repetitive, circular manner. There is a lack of cohesive devices to link sentences or ideas effectively. For example, the transition between the introduction and the body is abrupt, and the use of 'this picture' and 'this chart' is repetitive and informal. The structure does not facilitate a clear flow of information, making it difficult for the reader to follow the analysis of the graph. Improving the use of linking words like 'whereas', 'in contrast', or 'subsequently' would help create a more coherent structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.0

The vocabulary is very limited and repetitive. The student relies heavily on basic phrases like 'this chart tells us' and 'emission of carbon dioxide'. There is a lack of variety in reporting verbs and descriptive language. Furthermore, there are errors in word choice and terminology, such as using 'persent' instead of 'metric tons' or 'units'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to describe trends or comparisons effectively. To achieve a higher band, you should incorporate more precise academic vocabulary related to data description, such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', 'remained stable', or 'a significant decrease'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement ('This charts illustrates', 'This diagram tell'), incorrect word order, and missing articles. The sentence structures are simple and often fragmented, lacking the complexity required for higher bands. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after commas and improper capitalization. The misuse of basic verb tenses and the inability to construct clear, error-free sentences significantly impact the clarity of the report. Focusing on basic sentence construction, subject-verb agreement, and correct tense usage is essential for improvement.
