Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
the given graph illustrates the information about the emission of carbon dioxide in four different countries such as United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007. In this essay I will summarise and compare the main features of information.
In the UK highest emission has seen in 1967 which was around 11 metric tonnes among the all countries and it remained almost same till the next decade however it started declining after that reached to approximately 7 metric tonnes in year 2007.
It is clearly seen that Sweden and Portugal meet the same number of co2 emission in 2007 which was around 5 metric tonnes whereas Portugal started from lowest number of 1 metric tonn and Sweden had a spike in 1977 of more than 10 metric tonnes but then started declining from 1987 till 2007.
In Italy, the emission of carbon dioxide was started from more than 4 metric tonnes and then gradually inclined from 1977 till 1997. It remained stable for one decade from [redacted phone] almost 8 metric tonnes.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers all four countries and identifies key trends such as the UK's decline and Italy's growth. However, the overview is missing. An IELTS Task 1 response must include a clear summary of the main trends or differences at the beginning or end. While you mention the UK's high point and Portugal's low point, you do not provide a high-level synthesis of the overall patterns (e.g., the general downward trend for some versus the upward trend for others). Furthermore, the data reporting is slightly inaccurate in places, such as stating Sweden and Portugal met at 5 metric tonnes in 2007, which is not clearly supported by the graph. More precise data selection is required to reach a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the information. However, the use of cohesive devices is quite limited and sometimes mechanical. For instance, the transition between the UK description and the Sweden/Portugal section is abrupt. You rely heavily on simple conjunctions like 'and' or 'whereas'. To improve, use a wider variety of linking words such as 'In contrast', 'Subsequently', or 'Conversely' to better connect your ideas. Additionally, the introduction is a bit repetitive, as you state you will 'summarise and compare' rather than providing the actual summary of the data.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. You use basic verbs like 'seen', 'started', and 'reached' repeatedly. There are also some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'tonn' instead of 'tonnes' and 'inclined' when describing a graph (where 'increased' or 'rose' would be more natural). To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary related to trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', 'remained constant', or 'a gradual rise'. The current range is sufficient to convey meaning but does not demonstrate the flexibility required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. For example, 'highest emission has seen' should be 'the highest emission was seen' (passive voice). There are also issues with articles ('the' is missing before 'United Kingdom') and prepositions ('in year 2007' should be 'in the year 2007'). While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these small errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles to improve accuracy.
