Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line chart tracks carbon dioxide emitted by an indiviual of four countries, United kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal on average between 1967 and 2007.
Overall, Portugal and Italy had a significant rise in the emission while the production in sweden plummeted after some years. In United Kindom the emission decreased steadily.
Since 1967, United Kindom had the highest emission of 11 ton carbon dioxide which later on declined, making the smallest difference of almost 2 ton coming at 9 ton in 2007. Portugal and Italy on the other hand, had the same progress but there was a drastic difference in the numbers. In 1967, portugal was emitting only 1 ton while italy emitted around 4 tons of carbon, which changed over the years, Portugal rised upto 5 ton and Italy had an increase of more than 3 tons making a total of 7 ton.
Sweden was the only country with a noticable drop in number, starting with almost 9 ton in 196, peaked in 1977 at more than 10 ton, after that it decreased to only 5 ton and levelled with portugal in 2027.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons across the four countries over the specified period. An overview is provided, highlighting the general upward trends in Portugal and Italy, the decline in the UK, and the fluctuations in Sweden. Key data points are correctly identified and contrasted, such as the UK starting at approximately 11 tonnes and decreasing, while Portugal started low at 1 tonne and rose significantly. However, there are minor inaccuracies in data interpretation, such as stating Sweden levelled with Portugal in '2027' instead of 2007. Overall, the content is well selected and covers all necessary trends to satisfy the requirements of Band 6.5 to 7.0, ultimately fitting comfortably into a Band 6.0 due to some under-developed comparisons and minor data errors.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organized into logical paragraphs, beginning with an introduction, followed by an overall summary, and then two body paragraphs detailing specific country trends. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader, such as 'Overall', 'Since 1967', and 'on the other hand'. However, referencing and transitions are sometimes mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'making the smallest difference of almost 2 ton coming at 9 ton in 2007'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed body points. Logical organization is clear throughout, although progression between ideas can occasionally feel abrupt. This performance aligns well with the Band 6 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, attempting less common items such as 'plummeted', 'drastic difference', and 'fluctuations' (implied by description). However, there are numerous lexical and spelling errors throughout the text, including 'indiviual', 'United Kindom' (repeated multiple times), 'rised', and 'noticable'. Furthermore, units of measurement are referred to inconsistently as 'ton' instead of 'tonnes', and spelling slips like 'sweden' lack capitalization. Despite these errors, the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main points clearly, placing the response solidly at Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and introductory prepositional phrases ('Since 1967, United Kindom had...'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors and punctuation lapses, such as missing articles ('an indiviual of four countries', 'starting with almost 9 ton in 196'), incorrect verb forms ('rised upto'), and preposition errors. Complex structures often contain errors or awkward phrasing, though they rarely impede overall communication. Because simple sentences are generally accurate while complex structures exhibit recurring errors, this performance fits the Band 6 criteria.
