IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The given line chart illustrates the details about the average carbon dioxide emissions per person in different territories from 1967 to 2007. The units are mearured in tonnes.
At a glance, it is evident that, the trend showed fluctuations. Sweden had depicted the highest carbon dioxide as compared to others nations. Additionally, the lowest value was of Portugal.
To commence with, after analysing the chart, it can bi clearly seen that around 11 carbon dioxide tonnes was covered by United Kingdom which remained constant in first 10 years, then gradually declined from 11 to approximately 9 tonnes in final year. Furthermore, the carbon dioxide was started at 1 tonnes in 1967 which increased almost 5 tonnes in 1997 and stable in next years.
Probing ahead a further details, Swedon was accounted for 9 tonnes in former year and suddenlly jumpped up to above 11 tonnes in 1977. After there, fastly dropped down from 11 to 5 in 2007. Moreover, Italy was grow at 4.5 carbon dioxide in 1967 which shot up in all year and finally stopped at approximtely 7.5 in 2007.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the task by reporting on the given countries and their carbon dioxide emissions between 1967 and 2007. However, there are significant inaccuracies in data interpretation. For example, the student states that Sweden had the highest carbon dioxide emissions, whereas the line chart clearly shows that the United Kingdom consistently maintained the highest emissions throughout the period. Furthermore, the overview contains sweeping and somewhat inaccurate generalisations, and several specific data points are misread or poorly reported (such as the UK starting at 11 tonnes and ending at 9, and Portugal starting at 1 tonne). While the student does cover multiple countries, the factual errors in data reporting and comparison limit the effectiveness of the task response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is structured into basic paragraphs, starting with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. However, the progression of ideas is occasionally disjointed and mechanical. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as 'At a glance, it is evident that, the trend showed fluctuations', 'To commence with', and 'Probing ahead a further details'. Paragraphing is also somewhat confused, with body sentences jumping between different countries and years without a clear organising principle or smooth logical flow. Referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult to follow the relationships between data points across the timeline.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, with frequent lexical errors and awkward collocations. Examples include 'mearured', 'carbon dioxide tonnes was covered', 'suddenly jumpped up', and 'fastly dropped down'. The student attempts less common vocabulary such as 'fluctuations', 'gradually declined', and 'accounted for', but these are often undermined by spelling errors ('mearured', 'Swedon', 'jumpped', 'approximtely') and incorrect word choices. The lexical range is minimally adequate for the task, but errors in word formation and collocation occasionally cause strain for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but attempts at complexity are frequently marred by grammatical errors. Examples include passive and active voice confusion ('the units are mearured', 'Sweden had depicted the highest', 'Italy was grow at 4.5'), missing prepositions, and tense inconsistencies. Sentences such as 'which increased almost 5 tonnes in 1997 and stable in next years' and 'which shot up in all year and finally stopped' demonstrate a lack of control over basic clause structures and verb forms. Errors occur frequently throughout the text and occasionally impede communication, placing the response firmly in the Band 5 range for grammar.
