Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to cover the main trends in the line graph, including general patterns and specific country data. However, there are several inaccurate data points and misread values. For example, the student states that Italy emission 'started at 4 tonnes in 1967' (actual was 4.3) and 'levelled off at 8 at last decades' (actual was 7.6). More significantly, the text contains factual inaccuracies regarding the trends, such as stating that Sweden started at '7 person in 1967' (actual was 8.6) and finished at 5 tonnes, while confusing figures across categories. Furthermore, the overview is overly brief and somewhat muddled. Consequently, it falls into Band 5 because the information is only partially accurate and some details are under-developed or incorrect.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is divided into paragraphs, which helps structure the response, but the internal logical progression is weak. Cohesive devices are minimal, repetitive, and sometimes awkward (e.g., 'on the other hand', 'at last', 'thereafter', 'on the contrary'). Paragraphing is poorly handled, with run-on ideas crammed together without proper linking or punctuation. For instance, the transition between ideas inside sentences lacks clarity, such as 'which is same as Sweden' or 'same as Italy on the contrary United kingdom are at 11 person at 1967'. While there is a basic overarching structure with an introduction, body, and conclusion, the mechanical use of cohesive devices and lack of clear referencing limits the response to Band 5.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, featuring frequent reliance on simple verbs and nouns such as 'went up', 'started', 'finished of', and 'tonnes'. There are noticeable lexical errors and inaccurate collocations throughout the text, including 'faces dipped in emission', 'leveling off', and 'more emission at the end'. The student also uses incorrect terminology, such as referring to metric tonnes as 'person' ('started at 7 person in 1967'). Spelling is generally acceptable, but the limited range of vocabulary and frequent word-choice errors constrain the score to Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The text displays a very limited range of grammatical structures. Most sentences are simple or attempt complex forms that result in heavy errors, run-on sentences, and severe punctuation issues (e.g., missing periods, lowercase beginnings of sentences, and comma splices). Examples of grammatical errors include 'the line graph provide date', 'United kingdom faces dipped in emission', and 'Italy and Portugal have relatively similar trend where they went up'. Subject-verb agreement and tense consistency are major problems throughout the piece (e.g., mixing past and present tenses like 'have relatively similar trend', 'commenced', and 'finished'). Due to frequent errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, this merits a Band 5.
