Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to cover the main trends in the line graph, including the overall upward trajectories for Italy and Portugal, the downward trend for the UK, and the fluctuations in Sweden. However, there are significant inaccuracies in reporting specific data points and trends. For instance, the student states that Sweden experienced a 'drastic decrease in carbon effusion' from 1987 to 1997, when the chart shows it went from 7.0 to 6.1 (a modest decline, whereas the major drop actually occurred between 1977 and 1987, going from 10.3 down to 7.0). Furthermore, the overview is rather simplistic ('Portual and Italy have shown continuous significant increase'). While the key countries are mentioned, the lack of precision in data description and some misread trends limit the effectiveness of the task response, placing it firmly at a Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is divided into brief paragraphs, attempting an overall structure with an introduction, overview, and body paragraphs comparing different time periods. However, the logical progression is frequently hindered by awkward transitions, punctuation errors, and confusing cohesion. Phrases like 'where as Sweden has fluctuating graph' and 'Hailing from 1997 to 2007' demonstrate an unnatural use of cohesive devices and mechanical referencing. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal flow of ideas lacks clear progression, making the text feel disjointed. Furthermore, spelling and typographical errors in linking words affect readability. These issues align with the characteristics of a Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is quite basic and repeatedly inaccurate. The student uses awkward or inappropriate collocations such as 'breathed out carbon dioxide', 'carbon effusion', and 'exhaust of carbon dioxide', which demonstrate a lack of precision and misunderstanding of scientific terminology. There are also several spelling and typographical errors throughout the text, including 'Portual', 'where as', and 'Comparision'. While the student attempts less common vocabulary, the frequent word-choice errors and unnatural phrasing cause confusion and strain the reader, fitting the descriptors for Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and poorly formed complex constructions. There are numerous grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, such as missing articles ('the United Kingdom'), incorrect verb forms ('while in Italy and Portugal shown continuous growth'), and confusing tense or prepositions ('Starting 1977 to 1987'). The frequent errors in basic sentence construction cause considerable difficulty for the reader and prevent the text from achieving a higher score. Overall, the grammatical control corresponds to a Band 5.0.
