Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response attempts to cover the main trends in the chart for the four countries, mentioning countries like Portugal, Italy, Sweden, and the UK. However, the data reporting contains significant inaccuracies and misinterpretations. For instance, the student states that Portugal's emissions 'slightly rise in 1967 -1977 drop in 1987 and then rising in 1977 and also remain balance in 2007', which is contradictory and misreads the steady upward trend. Furthermore, the second paragraph includes irrelevant personal commentary and outside knowledge ('It shows how carbon dioxide is dangerous for our health which country need to pay attention on this issue. Carbon dioxide is also released by plants in night'), which is inappropriate for an Academic Task 1 response. There is no clear overview provided. This performance aligns with Band 4.0 descriptors due to minimal and partially inaccurate task fulfillment.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The response is poorly structured and lacks logical progression. The first paragraph starts with a flawed introduction, and the body text is compressed into two block paragraphs containing disjointed sentences. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as abrupt transitions ('In Italy average was increasing...', '1967 in Sweden average was low...'). The lack of proper paragraphing to separate different countries or overall trends makes the text difficult to follow. Referencing and logical sequencing are weak throughout, placing the response firmly at Band 4.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, with frequent lexical errors and inappropriate word choices (e.g., 'describe maximum carbon dioxide emissions', 'remain balance', 'incredible increase', 'over all ratio remain same'). The student struggles with precise terminology suitable for describing statistical data and trends. Moreover, there are issues with collocation and word forms. Because the vocabulary is limited and restricts clear communication, it meets the criteria for Band 4.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The grammatical range is extremely limited, relying mostly on simple or faulty sentence structures. There are numerous grammatical errors throughout the text, including missing prepositions, incorrect verb tenses, and subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'The given chart describe', 'emissions in people', 'Portugal slightly rise... drop... and then rising', 'average emissions of carbon dioxide in per person vary'). Punctuation is also weak, with missing periods and run-on phrasing. These frequent errors cause strain for the reader and correspond to a Band 4.0 score.
