Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5

The response attempts to cover the main features of the line graph showing carbon dioxide emissions for the four countries between 1967 and 2007. However, the task achievement is significantly hindered by confusion regarding data interpretation, where the student refers to 'metric tonnes of human beings' rather than emissions per person. While an overview is attempted, it is awkwardly phrased and lacks clarity. Some data points are mentioned, such as the UK starting highest and Portugal increasing over time, but the overall reporting of figures contains numerous inaccuracies and misreadings of the chart. Consequently, the response addresses the task only partially and the key features are not adequately or accurately presented.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0

The text is divided into four paragraphs, including an introduction and an overview, which shows an awareness of standard structure for Academic Task 1. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by confusing phrasing and poor cohesion. Cohesive devices are either missing or misused, leading to a disjointed flow of ideas. For instance, transitional phrases like 'With regards to the rest of descriptions' feel mechanical and unnatural. Referencing between sentences is often unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the progression of data comparisons across the four nations.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.0

The lexical range is extremely limited and heavily restricted by frequent errors in word choice, spelling, and collocation. Examples of inappropriate vocabulary include spelling mistakes like 'individuaal', 'diggerent', 'Portugaal', and 'increse'. Furthermore, the misuse of lexical items, such as stating that 'people contained the carbon dioxide' or referring to 'human being involved in carbon dioxide emission', severely distorts the intended meaning and causes confusion. The vocabulary is inadequate for a clear discussion of statistical data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The grammatical range is very limited, consisting mostly of simple and attempted complex sentences that are marred by frequent, intrusive errors. There are numerous basic mistakes involving subject-verb agreement, verb tenses, and prepositions, such as 'the maximum number of person take place' and 'in next year, there is rapidly increse'. Punctuation and sentence structures are often faulty, leading to many sentences where meaning is obscured. Grammatical control is weak throughout the entire response.
