IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The line graph below illusrates the emission of average carbon dioxide by single person from 1967 to 2007 in four different major countries.
Overall, United Kingdom depits the highest ratio over the period while Portugal shows least amount of emission but the ratio esclate suddenly at end. Moreover, Sweden shows drastically fall and Italy has also some faluctuations.
It is crystal clear that United Kingdom accounted for highest ratio throughout the period due to overpopulation there but at 2007 UK try to reduce it and shows minor decrease. Interestingly, the most noticing is Swedwn because it has dramatically fall at the end.
Another noticiable fact is that in 1967 emission rate in protugal is just 1% which rose suddenly and reach at 5% in 2007. Italy has considerable amount at intial but promotes almost double amount of emission at final year.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 150 words, coming in at 141 words, which incurs a penalty on Task Achievement. While the candidate attempts to provide an overview and highlights some main trends (such as the UK being highest, Portugal rising, and Sweden falling), the data selection and reporting are inaccurate in several places. For instance, the claim that Portugal was 'just 1%' in 1967 is a misinterpretation of metric tonnes as percentages, and the assertion that the UK reduced emissions due to 'overpopulation there' introduces unsupported external speculation rather than objective reporting. Furthermore, some trends are imprecisely described, such as Sweden's trajectory and Portugal's final figures. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay attempts a paragraph structure with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. However, the logical progression is hindered by poor transitions and a lack of cohesive control. Connectors like 'Overall', 'Moreover', and 'Interestingly' are used, but the internal links between sentences feel mechanical and disjointed. Paragraphing is attempted, but the very short and fragmented nature of the body paragraphs disrupts the flow. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, such as pronoun usage and ambiguous comparisons between countries. Cohesion is therefore faulty and repetitive, placing this response at Band 5.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The lexical range is limited and repetitive. The student relies heavily on basic vocabulary such as 'ratio', 'emission', 'amount', and 'high'. There are noticeable word choice and collocation errors throughout the text, such as 'emission of average carbon dioxide by single person' instead of 'average carbon dioxide emissions per person', 'ratio esclate' instead of 'emissions escalate', and 'promotes almost double amount' instead of 'produces nearly double the amount'. Furthermore, terms like '%' are used incorrectly instead of 'metric tonnes', and there are frequent spelling errors such as 'illusrates', 'depits', 'esclate', 'Swedwn', 'protugal', and 'intial'. These errors cause some difficulty for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writing displays a very limited range of grammatical structures. Most sentences are simple or attempt complex forms that result in structural failure and frequent errors, such as 'United Kingdom depits the highest ratio over the period while Portugal shows least amount of emission but the ratio esclate suddenly at end.' There are frequent issues with subject-verb agreement ('Sweden shows drastically fall'), missing articles ('at end', 'at final year'), and incorrect prepositions. Tense consistency is also problematic, as the past data is sometimes discussed in the present tense ('UK try to reduce it'). These frequent errors impede smooth reading.
