Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the prompt by summarising the overall trends and reporting some data points for the four countries. However, there are significant inaccuracies in the figures reported. For instance, the student states that in 1967 carbon emissions were '1 metric tonnes by Portugal' (actually 1.2) and that Portugal reached '5.5 metric tonnes' in 2007 (actually 5.4). More concerningly, Sweden is said to have started at 'almost 9 metric tonnes' (actually 8.6) and dropped to 'around 5.6' (actually 5.4), but the peak in 1977 is described as 'more than 10 metric tonnes' (correct at 10.3), though some comparative relationships are missed or confused. The overview correctly identifies the diverging trends between the UK/Sweden and Italy/Portugal, but due to inaccuracies in data reporting and a lack of fully developed comparisons, it satisfies Band 5.0 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response is structured into an introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs. However, the logical progression is hindered by poor paragraphing choices and confusing transitional phrases such as 'to begin' and 'Moving further'. Paragraph boundaries are clumsy, separating related points about individual countries awkwardly. Cohesive devices are often used mechanically or inaccurately, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the sudden shift to discussing the UK at the end of the final paragraph. Overall, the essay displays some organisation, but the lack of clear overall progression and flawed cohesive management place it at Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, frequently relying on phrases like 'carbon emission per person annually' and 'metric tonnes'. There are noticeable lexical and collocation errors, such as 'followed decreased trend' instead of 'followed a downward trend', 'slightly increased trend' instead of 'upward trend', and 'drastic increased' instead of 'drastic increase'. Spelling errors also appear, such as 'intial' instead of 'initial' and 'showsed' instead of 'showed'. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the general topic, these persistent errors and limited range restrict the score to a Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts some complex sentence structures, but these are frequently faulty and ungrammatical. Examples include 'the carbon emission per person annually by United Kingdom and sweden was followed decreased trend' and 'in year 1967 the carbon emission annually 1 metric tonnes by Portugal and 4 metric tonnes per person annually in Italy respectively.' There are frequent missing verbs, incorrect prepositions, and tense inconsistencies. Simple sentences are also poorly controlled, leading to frequent errors that cause difficulty and hesitation for the reader. This corresponds to a Band 5.0 level of grammatical control.
