Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The student attempts to address the task by mentioning the countries and certain trends, but the response suffers from severe flaws in content selection and interpretation. For instance, the student states that carbon dioxide in Portugal experienced a high boost across all years, which is accurate, but the overall summarization is heavily repetitive and conversational ('In my oppinon...'). Key data points are often generalised vaguely or misreported, such as repetitive and confusing phrasing regarding whether emissions increased or decreased. Furthermore, the inclusion of personal commentary ('In my oppinon') violates the neutral reporting style required for Academic Task 1. Consequently, the response falls into the lower bands for Task Achievement, specifically matching Band 4.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

The organization of the essay is weak. The text is split into three short paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is highly repetitive and lacks logical sequencing. Cohesive devices are either missing or misused, relying on rudimentary and repetitive conjunctions and connectors (e.g., 'then he was going to', 'butt same emmision'). Paragraphing is poorly utilized, as the second and third paragraphs restate similar information without clear distinction between countries or timeframes. Referencing pronouns like 'he' are used incorrectly for inanimate subjects such as carbon dioxide emissions. Overall, the arrangement lacks a clear overall progression, aligning with Band 4.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with frequent spelling mistakes throughout the text (e.g., 'emmissions', 'decribe', 'oppinon', 'differents', 'decrese', 'butt', 'emmision', 'gass', 'comman', 'issuse', 'rase', 'samed'). The student attempts less common vocabulary such as 'stable' and 'boost', but these are used inaccurately or repetitively. There is a lack of control over word formation and spelling, and vocabulary is insufficient to allow for precision. These persistent lexical errors and limited range place this response firmly at Band 4.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0

The grammatical range is extremely limited, relying heavily on simple sentences and faulty attempts at complex structures. There are frequent, heavy grammatical errors that often impede understanding, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('carbon dioxide is stable the his going to decrese', 'carbon dioxide emmissions are samed'), incorrect pronoun usage ('then he came back'), and poor punctuation and capitalization. Complex sentences are rarely successful, and basic grammatical rules are frequently broken. This level of grammatical control corresponds to Band 4.
