IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph tracks the emissions of carbondioxide in metric tonnes by individuals in four differents nations from the period 1967 to 2007.

Overall, it is clear that Portugal and Italy showed a considerable rise of CO2 emissions over the period, while Uk and Sweden declined gradualy. United Kingdom stayed at the highest in the emission of gas by per person in all the years.

In detail, United Kingdom began from nearly 11 metric tonnes in 1967,which then declined gradually to reach at approximately 9 metric tonnes by the year 2007. Furthermore, around 9 metric tonnes were consisted for Sweden in 1967, it then climbed to just above 10 metric tonnes in 1977, and then considerably dropped at about 5 metric tonnes in 2007.

Portugal started from just above 1 metric tonnes in 1967, it then increased exponentionally to reach nearly 3 metric tonnes by 1987. After that, it rose to roughly just under 6 metric tonnes until 2007. Similarly, around 4 metric tonnes were represented by Italy in 1967. The figure showed an upward direction to reach just below 8 metric tonnes in 1997, and subsequently Italy remained stable until last year.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully covers all major trends and features of the provided chart. You correctly identify that Portugal and Italy experienced substantial increases, whereas the UK and Sweden saw declines over the forty-year period. Furthermore, you correctly point out that the United Kingdom maintained the highest emissions per person throughout the entire timeframe. Most specific figures cited (such as the UK beginning near 11 metric tonnes and ending around 8.7, and Portugal starting near 1 metric tonne) are accurate and grounded in the data. However, there are minor numerical inaccuracies in the body paragraphs, such as stating Sweden consisted of around 9 metric tonnes in 1967 when the chart shows approximately 8.6, and claiming Italy remained stable until 'last year' rather than 2007. Despite these minor lapses, the task is well addressed with a clear overview.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response is logically organised and progresses clearly from an introductory statement with an overview into detailed body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different nations and trends. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In detail', 'Furthermore', and 'After that' are employed to guide the reader through the data. However, some referencing and cohesive links are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as starting a sentence with 'Furthermore, around 9 metric tonnes were consisted for Sweden', which detracts from natural flow. Overall progression is clear, but cohesion could be more seamlessly integrated.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an Academic Task 1 response, successfully utilizing terms like 'emissions', 'considerable rise', 'declined gradually', and 'exponentially'. However, there are notable word choice and collocation errors throughout the text. For instance, 'carbondioxide' is written as one word with a spelling error, 'differents nations' contains a pluralisation error, 'were consisted for Sweden' is an awkward and incorrect passive construction, and 'until last year' misinterprets the endpoint of the chart (2007). These lexical inaccuracies prevent the score from reaching a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating subordinate clauses and introductory phrases effectively (e.g., 'The line graph tracks the emissions...'). There are, however, several grammatical errors that recur, such as missing articles ('declined gradualy'), awkward passive phrasing ('were consisted for Sweden', 'were represented by Italy'), and minor punctuation issues. While these errors do not severely impede communication, they show a lack of consistent control over complex grammatical forms, placing this performance firmly in the Band 6 category.
