IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The illustration gives information about the emission of carbon dioxide by every person in the four different countries between 1967 to 2007. Overall, the carbon emission of Portugal and Sweden were same in 2007.

It is quite evident from the line graph that the emission of carbon dioxide in the Portugal was approximately 1.5 in 1967. After 10 years, this emission of this gass was increased from 1.5 to 2. In 2007, the emission of this gass was reached at about 5.5. In 1967, the carbon emission in Italy was 4.1. In 1987, this gass emission increased from 4.1 to approximately 7, and in 2007, it was reached at 7.8.

Furthermore, the CO2 emission in Sweden was 8.5, and increased 1.5 after 10 years. Then this gass emission were decreased continously from 10 to 5.5. In 2007, the United Kingdom had highest level of carbon dioxide emission. The carbon emission in United Kingdom was continously reduced from 11 to 8.5 in 40 years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student attempts to address the prompt by summarising the main features of the line graph showing CO2 emissions between 1967 and 2007. An overview is attempted with the sentence "Overall, the carbon emission of Portugal and Sweden were same in 2007," though this is factually inaccurate based on the data (Sweden is 5.4 and Portugal is 5.4, which are very close, but the overview is somewhat limited). Key features are selected, such as starting and ending points for Portugal, Italy, Sweden, and the UK, but some figures contain minor inaccuracies (e.g., stating the UK emission was "11" when it starts around 10.8). Ideas are generally relevant, but the support lacks full development and precise data comparison. This falls into Band 5 territory as it addresses the task partially with some limited and under-developed ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has some basic organisation with distinct paragraphs, but lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is attempted, with body paragraphs split by countries, but the grouping is somewhat arbitrary. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and repetitively (e.g., starting multiple sentences with "In 1967," "In 2007," or "Then this gass emission"). Referencing is sometimes unclear, and logical links between sentences are frequently absent or awkward. For example, the transition from Portugal to Italy and then to Sweden feels disjointed. Overall, the structural arrangement meets the Band 5 descriptors, showing some organisation but lacking fluent progression and effective cohesive management.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, frequently reusing terms like "emission," "carbon emission," and "gass" (spelled incorrectly). There are noticeable spelling errors ("gass" instead of gas, "continously" instead of continuously). The lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey simple data points like "increased" and "decreased," but lacking flexibility or less common lexical items. Word choice is sometimes unnatural (e.g., "reached at about 5.5"). These errors cause occasional difficulty for the reader and reflect a Band 5 level of lexical resource.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ("the carbon emission of Portugal and Sweden were same"), incorrect prepositions and verb patterns ("reached at about 5.5"), and awkward passive/active transitions ("this emission of this gass was increased"). Punctuation and sentence structures are basic, and errors occur frequently throughout the text, occasionally causing confusion for the reader. This performance aligns closely with the Band 5 descriptor for grammatical range and accuracy due to the high frequency of faulty structures.
