IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The line graph tracks changes in average Carbondioxide emissions a green house gas emiited by individuals in the different parts of Europe including United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal from 1967 to 2007.Portugal shows increasing trend of Carbonfootprint by people where as Britan shows decrease carbondioxide emitted by person.he units are measured in metric tonnes.
British emitted low carbondioxide into the environmnet starting from nearly 11 metric tonnes to approximately 9 metric tonnes in 2007. Where as Swedish in 1967 shows increased emission which peak at slightly above 10 metric tonnes in 1977, then decline in the next year with small dip at 7 metric tonnes in 1987.
Similary Italian shows the similar trend in the start but emissions increased irreguraly peaked at 1977and 1997 and then remain stable afterwards. While portugues emiited highest carbondioxide emission with small dip at 1987 and showed peak at 1997 and then average concentration rof carbondioxide remain constant.
In conclusion, the average carbondioxide emiited by united kindgom fell from year1967 to 2007, where as Portugal shows increased emission by each year passing by.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to cover the main trends in the line graph comparing CO2 emissions in four countries. However, there are notable inaccuracies in reading the data, such as stating that British emissions started from 'nearly 11 metric tonnes' (actually 10.8, which is acceptable) but misinterpreting other data points, such as stating Italy remained stable after 1997 when the data shows it stayed flat at 7.6, or mischaracterising Portugal's overall trajectory as higher than others. Furthermore, the overview is rather basic and repetitive. While all four countries are mentioned, the lack of precision in describing key features and some misinterpretations place this at Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response is divided into four paragraphs: an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion. However, the logical progression is hindered by poor referencing and mechanical or missing cohesive devices (e.g., 'Where as Swedish in 1967 shows...'). Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal cohesion of the sentences often feels disjointed. Words like 'Similary' and 'While' are used, but their connective force is weakened by grammatical instability and awkward phrasing. Overall arrangement is somewhat coherent, aligning with a Band 5.0 descriptor.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student attempts less common vocabulary such as 'Carbondioxide emissions', 'green house gas', and 'Carbonfootprint', but these contain numerous spelling and word-formation errors ('Carbondioxide', 'emiited', 'emiited'). There are also repeated phrasing issues and imprecise choices, such as 'average concentration rof carbondioxide'. The vocabulary is adequate for conveying basic ideas, but spelling errors ('Britan', 'irreguraly', 'portugues') and word choice inaccuracies cause noticeable strain for the reader, fitting a Band 5.0 level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The text contains a very limited range of structures and frequent grammatical errors. Simple sentences predominate, and attempts at complex structures are often faulty (e.g., 'Portugal shows increasing trend of Carbonfootprint by people where as Britan shows decrease carbondioxide emitted by person.he units are measured in metric tonnes.'). Articles are frequently missing ('starting from nearly 11 metric tonnes', 'Similary Italian shows'), subject-verb agreement is flawed ('Swedish... shows', 'Italian shows'), and punctuation is occasionally neglected. These frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader, placing this submission firmly at Band 5.0.
