Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the task by reporting information for all four countries across the given timeframe. However, there are significant issues with data accuracy and interpretation. For instance, the writer states that Portugal's emissions were '1%' in 1967 and '5%' in 2007, confusing metric tonnes with percentages. Furthermore, while an overview is attempted, it is overly brief and misses key comparative elements. Some trends are described correctly in a general sense, such as the overall rise in Portugal and Italy and the decline in the UK, but the imprecise data reporting and lack of a well-developed overview limit the effectiveness of the response. This performance aligns with Band 5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response is divided into multiple paragraphs, attempting an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs. However, the organisation lacks clear progression and overall logical flow. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or repetitively, such as 'Firstly' and 'Secondly', and transitions between sentences can be abrupt. Referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly in the final paragraph where sentences like 'Portugal and Sweden are touch in one point in 2007' create confusion rather than clarifying the relationship between the data series. Paragraphing is attempted but lacks the structure required for higher bands. This places the response firmly at Band 5.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently relying on simple verbs like 'rise', 'drop', and 'grow up'. The student consistently misuses percentage units (writing '%') instead of metric tonnes when discussing emissions data. There are also lexical errors such as 'emssions' and awkward phrasings like 'the trends are stand out'. While the range of vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the basic topic of carbon dioxide emissions, frequent inaccuracies in word choice and inappropriate unit terms prevent the response from achieving a higher score. This corresponds to Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures. Simple sentences predominate, and attempts at more complex constructions are frequently faulty, such as 'The graph illustrate the average carbon dioxide(co2) emissions...' and 'Portugal are rise in this point and Sweden are drop this point.' There are persistent errors in subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Sweden are', 'Italy are'), tense consistency, and missing prepositions. These frequent grammatical errors cause noticeable difficulty for the reader and impede smooth comprehension, matching the descriptors for Band 4.
