IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The graph illustrates the average how much carbon dioxide has been emitted by per capita between 1967 and 2007 in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal.
Overall, United Kingdom and Sweden were highest in producing carbon dioxide in the begining years, but significantly dropped at the later years. Whereas Italy and Portugal was lowest in releasing emissions in the intial years but increased rapidly in later years.
To begin with the United kingdom, per person in the country was responsible for emitting around 10 metric tonne gas in 1967 to 1987, which decreased to near 8 metric tonne in 2007. Similarly, per Swedish released between 8 to slightly above 10 metric tonne between the year of 1967 and 1977, then emissions production sharply declined in 2007 by about 5 metric tonne.
Approximately 4 metric tonne CO2 has been emitted by per person in Italy in 1967, and the CO2 discharge kept growing decade after decade until it reached to near 8 metric tonne in 2007.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to cover all four countries shown in the graph and provides an overview of the main trends. However, the response is incomplete as the writing cuts off mid-sentence (stopping abruptly after discussing Italy and omitting Portugal entirely). Furthermore, there are some inaccuracies in reporting the data; for instance, stating that Sweden released 'between 8 to slightly above 10 metric tonne between the year of 1967 and 1977' misreads the starting point of 8.6 in 1967 rising to 10.3 in 1977, but the omission of Portugal and the incomplete final paragraph severely restrict the development of the task. Because the response is unfinished and misses a key country, it aligns best with Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic organizational structure with an introductory paragraph, an overview paragraph, and initial body paragraphs. However, the progression is disrupted because the essay is unfinished. Cohesive devices are used in a mechanical or repetitive manner, such as 'To begin with', 'Similarly', and 'Approximately', and referencing between sentences is sometimes weak. Paragraphing is attempted, but the abrupt ending prevents a cohesive conclusion. These issues place the response firmly in Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for basic communication but lacks precision and flexibility. The student relies on repetitive phrasing such as 'metric tonne', 'emissions', and 'in the beginning years'. There are noticeable awkward collocations and non-standard expressions, such as 'average how much carbon dioxide has been emitted by per capita' in the introduction, and 'per Swedish released' instead of 'emissions per person in Sweden' or 'Swedish emissions'. Word choice limitations and occasional errors in word formation (e.g., 'intial' instead of 'initial') mean this criterion sits at Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but these are often marred by grammatical errors. Examples include 'average how much carbon dioxide has been emitted by per capita', 'United Kingdom and Sweden were highest in producing carbon dioxide in the begining years, but significantly dropped at the later years', and 'Where as Italy and Portugal was lowest'. There are frequent errors with prepositions, verb forms, and subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Portugal was lowest... but increased'). Because complex structures are frequently faulty and errors cause some difficulty for the reader, a band score of 5.0 is appropriate.
