IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The graph below represents the amount of carbon dioxide emmisions which is done by per person in the UK, Sweden, Italy and Portugal from the year 1967 to 2007.

Overall, it can be seen that in 1967 the UK had the highest amount of carbon dioxide emmisons, approximately 14 metric tonnes, which later became almost 9 metric toones in 2007. Whereas, Italy and Portugal stardet the year with a lower amount but ended the year with and increasing amount.

To begin with, in 1967 the UK was recorded for having almost 14 metric tonnes of carbon dioxied emmisions. This number had a steady fall throught the year and in 2007 the amount stood at almost 9 metric tonnes. On the other hand, Sweden started the year with approximately 9 metric tonnes of CO2 emmisions. This number rose in 1977 and became almos 11 metric tonnes. However, by 2007 the amount decreased and stood approximately at 5 metric tonnes.

Moreover, Italy and Portugal had the lowest amount of CO2 emmisions, almost 4.5 and 3 metric tonnes respectively. However these amounts grew over the year and by the end of 2007 Italy's amount became nearly 8 and Portugal's amount became almost 5 metric tonnes, same as Swden's.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student attempts to cover the main features of the graph, including the overall trends and specific data points for the four countries. However, there are significant inaccuracies in the data reported. For instance, the student states that the UK started at approximately 14 metric tonnes in 1967, whereas the actual figure is around 10.8. Similarly, Sweden's starting point is misread, and other figures are noticeably imprecise. Despite these data discrepancies, an overview is provided and comparisons are made between the countries. Because of the noticeable inaccuracies in data interpretation, the response satisfies the criteria for Band 5.5 to 6.0, settling at Band 5.0 due to the extent of misreported figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response is structured into an introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs, demonstrating an attempt at logical organization. Cohesive devices are used to link ideas, such as 'Overall', 'To begin with', 'On the other hand', and 'Moreover'. However, some of the referencing and transitions feel mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'ended the year with and increasing amount'. Paragraphing is present and generally appropriate for an academic task. Progression is discernible, though hindered slightly by inaccurate data reporting. This performance aligns well with the Band 6 descriptors for Coherence and Cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting words and phrases such as 'amount of carbon dioxide emissions', 'steady fall', and 'decreased and stood approximately at'. However, there are numerous spelling errors throughout the text, including 'emmisions' (repeatedly misspelled), 'toones', 'stardet', 'throught', 'dioxied', and 'Swden's'. Furthermore, word choice is occasionally imprecise. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the general meaning, the high frequency of spelling errors pulls the lexical score down into the Band 5 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, using relative clauses and subordinate conjunctions like 'which is done by per person' and 'whereas, Italy and Portugal stardet the year...'. Grammatical accuracy is weak, featuring awkward phrasing such as 'emissions which is done by per person' and tense inconsistencies. Punctuation is generally basic but manageable. Because errors in grammar and word formation frequently occur and occasionally impede smooth reading, this response fits the Band 5 descriptor for grammatical accuracy.
