Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the task only partially and falls short of the minimum length requirement, containing only 135 words. While the student attempts to summarise the main features of the graph, the overview is extremely limited and many details are inaccurate or poorly expressed. For instance, the claim that UK emissions started decreasing 'after an year' in 1977 does not accurately reflect the trajectory, and figures are frequently misread or generalised too vaguely (e.g., 'end at nearly 8 metric tonnes' for Italy). To improve, the writer must meet the word count requirement, present a clearer overall trend, and report key data points more precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some basic organisation with the use of separate paragraphs for different countries, but the response lacks clear overall progression. Cohesive devices are minimal, repetitive, or inaccurate, such as relying heavily on basic sequential openings like 'In sweden,' 'In Ietly,' and 'Lastly the Portugal was also'. Referencing between sentences is sometimes unclear, and the lack of a cohesive introductory overview further limits the flow. To achieve a higher band, the writer should use a wider variety of cohesive devices more naturally and ensure logical transitions between body paragraphs.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The vocabulary contains frequent spelling errors (e.g., 'ilustrate', 'carban', 'dramaticaly', 'continously', 'Ietly', 'incrase') and formatting mistakes like missing capitalisation on proper nouns ('united kindom, sweden, italy and portugal'). Word choice is basic, and attempts at less common vocabulary result in awkward phrasing. To improve, the student needs to expand their range of vocabulary related to data trends (such as 'fluctuate', 'decline', or 'gradual') and pay much closer attention to standard spelling and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer uses a very limited range of sentence structures, relying on simple or repetitive patterns. Attempts at more complex statements often result in frequent grammatical errors, such as incorrect verb tenses and passive/active confusion (e.g., 'the carbon emissions was dramaticaly increased', 'the Portugal was also incrase'). There are also frequent errors with prepositions, articles, and number agreement (e.g., 'metric tonnes' used correctly alongside singular noun confusions). To reach a higher band, the writer must demonstrate greater control over basic verb forms, improve sentence variety, and reduce the frequency of grammatical slips.
