IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The given graph compares the information about how corban dioxide emmit by one person in five different countries such as United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.

Overall, it is observed that in United Kingdom corban dioxide is emitted at a very high rate. While portugal had the lowest number of emissions of corban dioxide.

Firstly, from 1967 to 1987 emissions of corban dioxide inclined around 2.5 metric tonnes from 1.5 to 4 in Portugal and then went to 5 metric tonnes in 2007. Additionally, emissions of corban dioxide was decreased until 10 million ton in 1987 and reached around 9 metric tonnes in 2007 in United Kingdom. Furthermore, the emissions of corban dioxide went upward until 10.1 metric tonnes but then decreased to 5.3 metric tonnes in 2007 in Sweden.

However, in Italy it raised to 6.2 metric million in 1977 but then it reached until 7.8 metric million in 1997 and remained the same in 2007.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response attempts to address the task by reporting on several countries and data points from the graph, meeting the minimum length requirement. However, the information presented is only partially accurate and lacks complete development. For example, the student states that emissions in Portugal went from 1.5 to 4 metric tonnes and then to 5 metric tonnes, which partially matches the visual data, but the overview is very limited. The summary of countries is confused in places, such as stating there are five countries when the graph shows four, and mixing up figures. The key trends and comparisons between the countries are not fully or clearly outlined, leaving the overview somewhat unclear and underdeveloped, placing this aspect in the middle band.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some basic organisation in the response, dividing the information into an introduction, a brief overview, and body sentences. However, there is no clear overall progression of ideas, and the connection between sentences can feel disjointed. Cohesive devices are used minimally or somewhat inaccurately, such as relying heavily on basic sequence markers like 'Firstly', 'Additionally', and 'Furthermore' rather than logical transitional phrases. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of data is erratic, jumping between countries without a cohesive narrative structure. Referencing is occasionally unclear, which prevents the writing from flowing smoothly and achieving a higher level of logical progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. There are several noticeable spelling and word-form errors that stem from attempts at less common lexical items, such as 'corban' instead of carbon and 'emmit' instead of emissions. Other inaccuracies include misuse of units, such as switching between 'metric tonnes' and 'million ton'. While the general topic of CO2 emissions is somewhat communicated, these frequent errors in spelling and word choice cause some difficulty for the reader and restrict the lexical score to the middle band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple statements with occasional attempts at complex forms that are often faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors involving subject-verb agreement, verb tenses, and prepositions, such as 'emissions of corban dioxide was decreased' and 'it raised to 6.2 metric million'. Punctuation is also basic. These frequent errors across various sentence structures cause noticeable difficulty and distraction for the reader, placing the grammatical performance firmly within the middle band.
