Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by presenting an overview of the main trends and selecting key features from the graph. You correctly identify that emissions in Italy and Portugal increased over the period while the UK and Sweden experienced a downward trajectory overall. However, some areas are under-developed or contain inaccuracies when compared to the visual data. For example, your description of Portugal stating it 'increased was 1 metric ton' and went up to '7 metric tonnes' contains slight errors, as it started near 1.2 and finished around 5.4. Similarly, your claim that Sweden became '9 metric tonnes' in 2007 misreads the actual data point of 5.4. Despite these data misreadings, the main overall trends are covered, placing this response at the expected level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at a logical structure. The response is divided into an introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs covering the contrasting trends. You make reasonable use of cohesive devices to guide the reader, such as 'Overall', 'On the one hand', and 'On the other hand'. To push further into higher bands, your referencing and linking within paragraphs could be smoother and more precise, avoiding some mechanical transitions. The progression of ideas is generally clear, though paragraphing and the grouping of countries could be slightly more refined to ensure seamless flow from one point to the next.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and synonyms such as 'emissions', 'escalated', 'gradually', and 'metric tonnes'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward phrasing throughout the text, such as 'released carbon dioxide' instead of 'emissions of carbon dioxide', 'Portugual' (spelling error), and 'emissions per person also escalated in Italy' where phrasing is slightly unnatural. While these errors do not seriously impede communication, they restrict your score due to inaccuracies in word choice and spelling. Using a more precise and varied vocabulary with correct word forms would elevate your lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like 'it can be clearly seen that...' and subordinate clauses with 'whereas'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors in sentence structures, prepositions, verb forms, and articles. Examples include 'The line graph illustrate' (subject-verb agreement error), 'fron 1967 to 2007' (spelling/preposition error), 'in UK' (missing article), 'it reach at approximately' (tense and preposition error), and 'in Sweden it increase' (tense error). These errors occasionally cause difficulty for the reader and reflect a pattern of frequent minor and moderate mistakes in grammar, keeping the response at this specific level of accuracy.
